Should I paint mahogany skirting and door trims white

I have mahogany doors trims and skirting (solid mahogany) the doors are hardwood stained down to match. Over the year the trims have faded and now the doors and frames look very different in Colour, really a bit messy looking. I would like to keep the door stained But apprehensive about painting over good mahonany. I was going to use zinesser 123 and then

satin coat white.Advice please

Mahogany trim is quite dated (1980s/90s?) so I would definitely paint all the trim either some kind of white, or the same colour as the walls. I personally would also paint the door too.

Completely agree with Sonia. It’s such a dated and dark colour. You need to paint it all white. By doing this you’ll then find a lot more colours in emulsion to go on the wall that blend better.

Thanks again everyone! I agree that I wasn't sure if the warm wood tones would work well with a dark floor but stumac23 your family room looks great!! I think it looks like a surprisingly good combo! I still think white would look good too but it may be best to leave the bay window frame alone. Unsure. I guess I'll see what it's like once the walls and floor are done

It depends on lots of things. What is the colour you have chosen for the walls, and is it a traditional or contemporary look you are after? With pale walls a slightly darker skirting board can look very good, or you can obviously go lighter which may look more traditional. Painting all the same colour can also work and make the whole scheme look unified, this works with lights and darks. In terms of colour, most people go white but I have never used pure white, I prefer to choose a colour that is form the same 'hue' family but slightly darker. Little Greene have enough o a range that there should be plenty to choose from. Eggshell is always my choice for woodwork.

@rinq natural wood would have been nice if we had wood windows but unfortunately they are all white pvc, doh! I like the white with the dark navy theme though and I can add in black and some greenery and other colours into the room in decor to liven it up a bit. *****I just have to choose a carpet colour now!! The griege I was going for doesnt work with the navy - makes it feel a bit drab. Wasn’t going to go with silver grey but now the walls are blue, do you think this is the best colour??

hi Jamie, I see the problem you have with the doors opening. if you mark the 18- 20mm space allowing the doors to open you can have the skirting against the mdf and mitre it to finish at the door line. I also think the cupboard will look nice with a framed architraves which would solve the problem completely. hope the options help!! best Rowland
