Lawn Drainage Advice

I have a lovely blank canvas of a garden to get my eager green fingers into this year, but this is my first winter and the lawn is a quagmire. The garden slopes very slightly left to right, front to back. When I moved in, the lawn was just moss, which should have been a big clue. I'm not sure how to solve the drainage issue. There's a car park behind, and garages either side, so diverting via a french drain or a soakaway I don't think is an option. I have pets, so access to a lawn is a necessity. I'm kinda at a loss, any advice would be appreciated.

To be honest everywhere seems to be a quagmire at the moment. You may find as we go into Spring/Summer the ground will dry out.

Could be Leatherjackets? They are the offspring of crane flies (daddy long legs) and feed on the roots of grass. The Royal Horticultural Society has an article about the little blighters! Go to www.rhs.co.uk and search Leatherjackets. Birds love to eat them.

The septic tank at the house we are buying does not comply with current law. We need to add a drainage field or a treatment plant. Any advice on which is best, makes to use very gratefully received. The rules are a minefield. Biodisc by Klargester? PodTanks (non-electric)?

It all depends on your ground conditions, i.e. what soil type do you have. If they are only protruding 150mm above ground then 600mm is too deep, 300mm would be enough. Dig a trench 4-500mm deep, concrete in the bottom, 100mm, sit the sleepers on the concrete and fill with concrete either side haunching up the sides at 45 degrees to the top. Finished level of concrete 50-100mm below soil level to allow the grass to establish properly. Along the top where the concrete finishes to the oak, paint with a bitumen paint to help prevent the water ingress and rotting the sleepers. 300mm above ground, same as above but 5-600mm deep trench. You do realise that to maintain the lawn you will either have to use a strimmer along the edges or some shears to keep it neat. The strimmer will damage the sleepers over time.

I don’t think a bigger pipe is available. However there are some other things to try. Firstly get the drains checked outside- it could well be roots in your drain that means this is slow moving. You can get all your drains cleaned which also removes any fat build ups or other obstructions. You can also replace sharp corners with more gradual turns….. and you can ensure there is enough fall on the pipework- best to speak to a plumber about the distance to the main drain and the fall required.

You may find that since the house is not very old, the builders would have ruined the soil structure and when they get landscapers in to lay turf no ground preparation is undertaken. Speed is the key for them to get as many lawns laid in a day, more profit, cheaper for the builder.

The first thing you could try is to get a sturdy garden fork and push it all the way into the ground every 6-12" all pull back on the handle to loosen up the soil under the turf, this will help with aeration and drainage (hopefully) and improve the quality of the lawn come spring.
