Options for Finish on a Fibreglass Roof

We have a fibreglass roof which currently has decking above it as it’s used as a terrace. The decking has rotted and needs to be replaced. We are already replacing the balustrade with metal ironwork and an oak handrail, but are struggling with what to do with the floor finish.

I REALLY want a porcelain tile but many builders are not keen. I do not want more decking as it’s too much maintenance and will get slippy.

Can we have tiles? The roof is in good condition.

What can we do?

Consider an adjustable support pedestal to have a tile. Don’t forget to consider the extra weight over your existing deck

Its the hip that makes it look all a bit odd i think but i can totally see why it is irritating to spend money making it into a gable when in fact it gives you no usable room just a better looking house externally. The pitch to the top plan does seem very shallow which is going to compromise your rooflights to some degree. Of the two i think i would go with the pitch & flat combo as it will be marginally better looking and will give you a nicer vaulted space within the building. Have you thought about building a very modern extension? Still think that may be the way to do it, black framed windows / doors, high walls in grey render with totally flat roof - maybe put sedum on it to make it green and then get a massive roof lantern in the middle which will really brighten the inside up - wood burning stove and you got your self some Scandi-design. To take away from the height a bit get your builder to knock you up some brise soleil over the windows doors and bring planting as close to it as you can so it merges into the garden. Australians do modern on bungalows very well so i would look to them for inspiration.

Hi igho sadly it was not available, it was a probate purchase and was still showing for sale as the probate has been going on since November and wasn't complete, so the deal hadsnt even begun yet! I wouldn't be too impressed if I was the buyer and 7 months later no news.. I have now seen a 2 bedroom detached cottage in a really plush road, it's flanked by lots of 5 and 6 bed houses so it's a very unusual find. It's £475k and to make anything of this it would definitely need a 2 story extension and a substantial remodel with new kitchen and bathrooms, a £120k+ job probably. Very difficult to tell how risky this would be given that the total spend would be well over £600k once all fees and finishes are calculated. If I bought it and spent money doing a ground floor extension with kitchen diner etc, I'm still left with just a 2 bed cottage and even the estate agent said I'd make a loss! At the moment I'm more inclined to look towards renovation rather than extension type projects.

If you're leaning more towards a pitched roof, perhaps you could extend your glazing right up into the gable to maximize the light coming in. I've attached a couple of images of projects where we have done just that. The first was necessary due to it being a listed building so we suggested an additional tiled roof would be more in keeping than, for example, a flat roof with a roof lantern. The second was on a lovely Victorian terrace in Coggeshall and again, we suggested echoing the original architecture with a pitched roof and glazed gable. If you would prefer an orangery style extension, despite some previous comments it is definitely possible to have a space that is a nice even temperature all year round, doesn't collect lots of flies and doesn't leak. We have built these for 30 years. All of our roof lanterns are available with solar controlled glass and motorised vents, plus the combination of masonry and glass (as opposed to a traditional conservatory which is mostly glass) provides a a more consistent room temperature anyway. We offer a 10 year guarantee on our joinery, glass and paint coatings (parts and labour) - that's how confident we are that it won't leak. We also use Accoya wood in our products which is incredibly durable, stable, moisture resistant, fungus proof, inedible to insects and thus incredibly low maintenance. It's definitely worth googling Accoya if you're considering going for a structure that incorporates timber joinery.

Hi, Extension plans are moving on and now trying to finalise which roof finish is best. We have looked at various different options but wondered if anyone on here had any personal experience or tips. The roof will be slightly slopped. Main house is grey tiled and white render. Extension will be cladding (dark grey or black).

Thanks, so with an adjustable support pedestal is it right that the tiles wouldn’t actually be stuck down? They would just be rested on the pedestals? Assume that would allow for better drainage and also ease of maintenance to lift and sweep the roof below?

Ok fab. And does it need pebbles below or not? Assume those can just be laid straight onto the existing roof finish.

No pebbles needed- that picture shows what is likely a hardcore base for a garden level patio
