open plan kitchen / diner lighting

The attached photo is a rough plan of our kitchen / dining and playroom layout. The playroom will be partially separated off with a low storage wall. How would you do the lighting?

The kitchen will have a peninsula (not an island), and we plan on having a dining table opposite the bifolds. The kitchen will have a roof lantern.

Was thinking Spotlights throughout, statement pendant lights above dining table opposite the bifolds, and maybe another pendent light in the playroom, maybe some lamps although it won’t get used in the evenings.

If you have pendants above dining table and peninsula, with the window and bifold I don't think you need spotlights. a pendant in the playroom would be enough

It’s hard to say as we can’t see your kitchen plan or furniture layout. Do you have undercabinet lighting? I would definitely add lamps and in terms of downlights, just use where they’re needed rather than a grid formation ie Make sure the worktop is lit and maybe the dividing storage wall. If that’s a wall of storage in the kitchen on the left I’d light that too unless there’s lighting inside. If there’s a table in the play room for activity or a reading spot make sure that is lit.

It‘s a good idea to wire things separately and dimmer switches for pendants etc

An L shaped design sounds fine to me and I think it's practicality will outweigh concerns about it dominating. I agree a soft white is nicer in an older property and a more modern look than gloss but I don't agree that a painted finish is better with young ones as it can chip- I would look for a laminate door which despite being perceived to be lower quality will likely stand up to rough treatment

I’m struggling to find a way to have a kitchen/island (really would like an island to have useable counterspace), generous dining table (seating for at least 6 people) and a sitting area in the same room if we don’t open up the wall between the current front and back living rooms. Would it make more sense to have part of the garage incorporated into the kitchen? There is a slight difference in floor level though between the garage and kitchen (Step down into the garage). Or block up the current kitchen door and have the access to a dining/kitchen through the current back living room space and then somehow fit in a dining table and seating area?

Hi Sophia, I think the floor is the most important thing as it won't be changed once it's down, paint it relatively cheap. The best advice I could give (based on my recent experience) is that if you put a cool grey floor in a room that's filled with sun it's fine. If you do the same in a North facing room it can feel gloomy and cold and then you have the option of taking well known advice for a North facing room which is 'opt for warm, creamier colours for the walls'. Well this doesn't work too well with grey floors, it can look sickly. Therefore, the floor is a consideration at this point. There is a gorgeous tile from Topps called 'Sculpt' in beige which is the very same colour as warm concrete and it has an amazing look to it. General advice is to avoid cold greys in North faicng rooms and opt for yellow based neutrals. I have used Skimming Stone in my kitchen (North facing) but it's got lots of natural wood. Inset ceiling down-lights in a grid pattern on a dimmer throughout the entire area will give you maximum flexibility for furniture placement as well as a good level of light for working / cleaning. i don’t know what the extent of your wall shelves will be but LED strips on their underside will assist with lighting the worktops. Floor / table lamps at the sitting / dining end and the pendants over your island would give good ‘layering of light’ for ambience. Make sure each lighting style is on a separate circuit and is dimmable..

Hey, you could add LED into the ceiling lantern. There are single colour, dimmable and colour changing options available. Some LED spots in the kitchen area only around the lantern to give you task lighting. A nice pendant over the dining table and I would suggest wall lights in the play area as I imagine in time this could turn into a seating area and wall lights would be a nice feature for when this happens but still give enough lighting for the play area.

Thank you, some great ideas. I just wasn’t sure if it would look odd/not be practical enough if we didn’t have spotlights throughout the open plan area. Although we do only need it in the kitchen around the lantern. Great idea re LED strips in lantern. Thanks everyone :)
