What type of tree is planted to the right of the fireplace?

I assume that it is a variety that won't grow too large since it is planted in a small courtyard. I have the same situation and would love to plant a tree, also.

I think it would be such a shame to change the style of the mirror. It's period correct, it fits the style of the room, it's correct for the style and age of the fireplace. Why would you replace it with a modern round one? The armchair is correct style for the room in age I agree that the only thing wrong with it is the tone of colour, it matches nothing. Move it up slightly and balance the size of the objects around it. Please, please don't change it for a modern round one..................it's a crime against 'periodness'!! ....................

On the sunny side you could try Ceanothus an evergreen shrub with blue flowers, dwarf Lilac, Hibiscus shrub with large pink or purple flowers, Cistus and of course roses and Clematis. At the front of them you can plant lavender, hardy Geraniums, Erigeron, Campanula and Hemerocallis but there are hundreds of perennials you can choose. Just check they like sun and the height. Sometimes adding something taller at the front can add interest. On the shady side try Acers, Acer palmatum dissectum is gorgous. Fatsia japonica is evergreen but despite its exotic looks it’s hardy. Viburnums do well in the shade too and have lovely white flowers in spring. Climbing hydrangea is lovely and self clings to the fence. Then at the front try hardy Geraniums (they grow anywhere!), ferns, Dicentra spectabilis. For spring colour you have bulbs - daffodils and tulips for the sunny side and snowdrops and aconites for the shady side. Again there are loads, just check if they like sun or shade. Hello, I really like both Sonia’s suggestions. What way does the patio face? And do you know what kind of soil you have? As you are planting directly into a patio these will be important as you want a tree that will be happy as if it fails it will be a pain to get out! One thing first: newly planted trees need lots of water, and this is especially true if it is planted in a patio so will get limited rain: so make sure you include a watering tube that will deliver water right to the roots. I would suggest: 1: Amelanchier. Lovely tree that is easy to keep under control and delivers visual interest year round. 2: Cornus controversa. The wedding cake tree. Lovely open form - not sure I’ve seen it as a multi-stem, but even as a standard it stays quite small. 3: some form of cherry. Again, these are reasonably easy to keep small, and have beautiful bark that will look great with lighting. Also lots of year round interest.
