Please see additional query below re cladding/appearance of this house:

Suggestions of how to improve/update the appearance welcomed.

I'm hoping to buy this property, and whilst this is not an urgent query, I wondered whether anyone could advise about this panel of 'cladding' (if that's the right term for it)

on the front.

Would it would be possible to make the whole frontage plain brick (just like the rest of the house)? I know it's expensive to remove cladding.

Are there any alternatives?

What sort of timber cladding might work?

I should perhaps add that the adjacent houses don't have this decorative effect - they're all plain brick, like most of this one.

My son had tiles on the front of his house and it was changed to brick to match everything else so yes it can be done. There was a definite difference in the winter months with no heat loss. Those who still had the tiles had cold rooms regardless of the temperature the thermostat was turned up to while son’s house was warm all though so it may make a difference overall to heating bills too.

As we’re in the construction trade we did it ourselves. but I’d image it’s not the cheapest of jobs to have carried out.

I rather like your facade. I would think twice about painting the brickwork, as this would be a maintenance headache, but cleaning it would brighten it up. Otherwise stucco and paint the front ( brickwork) only? i would clad your existing canopy in lead, but leep the existing shape. Is the tarmac yours? If you could change this to something lighter and softer, this would have a really big impact. Clad the stairs in slate or indian sandstone, get rid of the block screen and replace with glass, ( marine grade stainless steel fittings and door furniture) black iron railing for the steps.

I agree, new front door, and some planting. The main problem is that everything is unrelieved red-brown! walls, windows, door, drive. Except the garage door, which then looks like a mistake! This is a common problem. You need to break up the brown. Render or cladding is probably overkill, there are more subtle solutions. Please don't put in an oak or stained timber door. It might look great in its own right, but will just be changing one brown for another! A painted timber (or composite) door would be best, with the garage door painted to match. Choose a shade of grey or green, avoid red and purple, as you need a good contrast to the brick. Ideally change the windows to cream, or grey-green, but if not, try the shutters. They are a bit 1960s, but might actually suit the style of this house! Painted to match the doors. Consider taking up some small areas of paving near the house to allow planting to create a break between the brick drive and the brick house!

Could you afford to face the render with matching stone? If not the whole thing, then around the window and door to make them seem a lot larger than they are. Or paint around them if you can't afford the stone. Then paint the top half in a similar colour to your stone. The False mirrored window above is a great idea for upstairs! The door needs a horizontal porch roof - good suggestion near the top of these comments. ( Would be good to right across door and window too). Pots, plants, climbers. Paint that downpipe to blend in too, and can the wire be re-routed (paint it too) to follow the edges of the building.

I would concentrate on the dormer windows, initially. I don't think the roofs of either are attractive, they both look mean and 'tight'. The brown cladding at the sides is wrong - it should be lead, painted timber to match the window frames or slate to match the roof. (Please don't use UPVC cladding!) Getting the detail right can be very effective. This is a new dormer bungalow I designed in a 1930s style, albeit in different materials. The dormer windows have flat lead roofs with big overhangs and moulded timber fascia. The flat roof dormer is probably more authentic to the house, but any style and detail has been lost when it has been re-roofed. A similar porch might work also well on your house. Although, if you go for flat-roofed dormers, you could do a great flat canopy porch with a hint of art deco style. The window arrangement in the central gable is very odd, too. But this may actually be improved by adding a porch. (Porches can often spoil a house, but the reverse might apply here) The garden is also very bleak. Some planting near the house, and even some climbers would make all the difference. The staining on the brickwork is strange, but I can't see enough detail. I would only repoint if the mortar is actually failing, as it can make a mess - get a professional to look at it, and make sure it is done well, with a lime-sand-cement mix. It won't make much difference to the appearance of the house. Simply cleaning off the worst of the staining might help - maybe with wire brushes - go carefully at first to make sure you're not damaging the bricks. The windows are not great, but could be a lot worse. If they are functionally okay, it may be good to keep them, and see how they look when some other details are changed. Depends on your budget.

I hadn't thought of the insulation issues, so that's very interesting to hear.

I will ask my surveyor for his thoughts on this aspect and also the builder(s) who I'm hoping to consult re other potential works on the house.

As an addition to this question -

I'm still progressing buying this house, and my surveyor has suggested that modern wood timber cladding could be applied over the decorative stone cladding on this facia.

Possibilities include Larch or Ash, and a variety of colours. He's also suggested refacing the dormer windows (two as seen on the front, and one on the back) at the same time with the same timber.

The windows may also need replacement.

What are people's thoughts on colours/styles of cladding? Might it be good to have darker framed windows against wood cladding (these seem to be more fashionable at the moment)?

I should add that there is a porch to the side of the house - just seen on the right. How would that look if it stays white, whilst window frames change to another colour? Would it be a good idea to change the colour of that too?

Any opinions welcomed. Thank you for reading!
