Heat / Smoke Alarm In Extended Kitchen Diner

Hi, we've just extended our kitchen and the sparky has been in to run cables and asked if we need a heat detector as part of building regs ( to be honest i'm disappointed he doesn't know! ).
There is a heat and smoke alarm in the architects drawings but a quick google tells me they have to be mains operated and connected to the other smoke alarms in the house. Is this correct? The building regs i've seen online are a bit difficult to understand.
Any help appreciated as the builders are plaster boarding the ceiling Friday so i need the cables running in before then.
Thanks,
