We do not recommend leaving cedar unstained. Cedar is naturally decay-resistant, but water is the enemy, leaching the natural tannins, oils and color out of the wood. This leads to cracks, splits and grayness over time. Staining adds water repellency and pigmentation (color) protects from harmful UV damage. We do not recommend clear coat stains on cedar exposed to sun because clear coats allow the cedar to go gray over time. Clear coats are fine for ceiling finishes and cedar that is not exposed to direct sunlight or precipitation. Hope this helps!

I have stayed in many wonderful places so a favourite is difficult to choose but an unusual and fun one has to be the Carlton Arms Hotel in New York City. It was my first time in New York many years ago. I lived in London and had to go for work and so decided to go a week early with a couple of friends and we booked this hotel from a Lonely Planet guide sight unseen (pre-internet!). Well it was amazing! We all had travelled quite a lot (2 Aussies and a Kiwi) and stayed in some unusual places but this was something else! A bit scruffy and basic but the rooms were so much fun (each had been decorated all over by a different artist, so incredible!) and the staff were wonderful and super friendly. We firstly stayed in the Yellow Submarine room, it was so well done we couldn't find the bathroom door as it was so well disguised. They let us change rooms every few days so we could experience different ones ... we also stayed in the Barbara Cartland room (4 poster bed on a platform with lots of pink chiiffon). As much as the rooms were fabulous and fun it was the people that really made it. As it was our first time in NY, as well as the usual tourist sights they suggested lots of local unusual/fun places to visit, we had such an amazing time! They were also generous in other ways. For example, one afternoon after a full day of sight-seeing we walked into reception and the guys there said ... "do you like baseball?". They had Yankees tickets that they weren't going to use so they gave them to us and wouldn't take any money. We went to the game and had a great night, something we wouldn't have done otherwise. When we bought them a box of beers to say thank you they were genuinely surprised. They made us feel like we were staying at their home and nothing was any problem in a very comfortable and relaxed way. Interestingly, after that week I moved downtown nearer to my office, to the then newly opened Millenium hotel for my work stay, all 5 star with black marble bathroom and amazing views (then opposite the World Trade Center). It was such a contrast and obviously luxurious. It was great to have my own bathroom and all that goes with that kind of hotel and the staff were polite and friendly but I was so glad my first taste of New York was staying at the Carlton Arms. It really made that first visit special and while I rarely like to visit the same place/city twice if I can go somewhere new, New York has become a firm favourite and I do my best to stop and visit for a few days if I'm ever flying anywhere near it and stay at the Carlton Arms when I can. As one person described it "weird but wonderful".

@Stone&Marble - It's true we probably take some things for granted over here, that said, we're probably behind many of our European counterparts when it comes to a variety of things - taking a Swiss train is pretty much bliss! What does everyone else think?

Hello Tom, Well I have been given a fair few really beautiful pressies over the years...One I fondly miss and used it till it fell apart in my 30's! Japanese school satchel for my 12th birthday.. It was black lacquer leather... Purple reflectors underneath for when you're leaning over your bike cycling.. and a hook for ones gym shoes.. On the reverse it had cream padded leather for your back... It was really beautiful! It was the boys traditional colour as red or navy for girls.. Loved the black and would have been my choice! Everyone loved it.... It was sooo different.. My best friend used to carry it round at lunch and tell everyone her Uncle bought it for her... (of course that was my Uncle) It was truly magnificent.. Came in handy too when.. you know the types.. Bully girls.. with nothing upstairs!! Jealous and stupid types whispering about people behind the scenes, nasty girls!! .. She followed me, tried to pull my hair, call me names, kicking and scratching like a hissy fit.. so she got a cool swing of said bag (full of books) Fell over in a puddle to a laughing crowd- I wasn't laughing!.. BUT.. never came near me again! The satchel though and I were as happy as anything.. It was probably the best satchel in the world! : ))

Hi JA, We have two dogs and have just moved to a house that requires renovation including structural from top to bottom (and it's 5 bedrooms and 3 floors) We hired Gina from Create Perfect (on here) and she's been absolutely amazing. She prevented us from spending a fortune in unnecessary extensions and showed us how to reconfigure our space through working with a structural engineer to get the space we needed without extending. We were given 3D images of different layouts and floor plans with advantages and disadvantages of each to help us visualise and prioritise what was important to us. She created 3D images of all of our rooms and even shopping lists of the suggested items we should buy. (I've attached a few pics to try and show you what sort of thing you get) She was available 24/7 literally and was more help than I could ever have imagined beforehand. The cost was remarkably reasonable and a fraction of what we're spending on the house. We also benefitted hugely from here trade discounts, which she was happy to pass on. A good designer with me a huge help not only with decorating schemes but the plans and layout for your house, they will also put a high emphasis on what you need and design around it (including pets) so you get a house that fits your lifestyle and doesn't just look like a show room. Best decision I could possibly have made to hire Gina (Create Perfect in here) and can't recommend highly enough the advantages of getting a good designer on board; it made the whole process fun too! Pick the right person and they will be a pleasure to work with and super respectful of your budget and lifestyle. Good luck with your project
