dark brown beams and skirting boards

Hi, we are trying to redecorate our living room. This is a mock Tudor house with dark beams and skirting boards… any idea in terms of paint and furniture? We would like to give it a modern twist .. anybody tried before and would like to share some pictures? Thanks for your help!

Hi,
Maybe you could change the fireplace and paint the wall with a light grey (I personally like Dulux grey steel 3 or night jewel 5)? Grey goes with everything and always give a modern look.

Perhaps paint the walls an off white (including the brickwork) and the dark wood beams etc in a putty colour. I’ve seen this done and it gives the room a lovely fresh look. A carpet would add comfort. With neutrals as your base, you can choose anything for your furniture.

Hi Anita, I did have a co. look at the house with a view to soda blasting all the remaining woodwork I hadn't yet tackled - skirts, arcs, beams, stairs. This is supposed to be a less aggressive process than sand blasting and from what I understand less messy because no water is used, only soda. I gave them a spare door as a test piece but I wasn't very happy with the finish. The wood had a slightly fuzzy finish to it which I would then need to give a light sanding. I didn't have any beams tested but I may go down this route for beams alone. Think you may get away with it on beams. Would suggest having a trial piece in situ carried out. with it on beams because the wood can take being in a rawer state. I'd suggest

It is the devils own job! You heed to sugarsoap everything down first to clean it. Sand it well and then apply a bumber of coats of a good solvent based white undercoat ( water based undercoats wont hack it). You need to apply as many as necessary until no more dark wood shows through. Then finish with a coat of a good quality finishing coat (satinwood, egg shell etc). It will take you forever! Good luck!

I bought a house with exactly the same delighful brown varnish. I did Zinsser Bin 1 coat. 2 coats of water based undercoat (rustins) and then 2 coats of top coat. Give the wood a light sand before Zinsser. Zinsser dries very quickly and is spirit based. I buy cheap brushes from Screwfix to apply it and then chuck them as it is virtually impossible to clean it out of them.

Sarah if I'm honest it's proving a bit of a pain. Its a UK gov grant so go to the website and then search for registered trade people near you. Supposedly they've only registered for the green home improvements they offer but I've found most ticked ask the boxes. I only found four around us that did under floor insulation and two are completely booked up, one isn't responding and the one we've had a quote from just feels a bit off. They have a handful of reviews online and just something doesn't feel right. so I'm doing some more research before committing. Then lots of paper work to complete but in the end we only pay our share and the company get the rest directly from the gov grant. Hopefully it'll work out...!

Would it be an option to paint walls and skirting boards but leave the beams and uprights around fireplace as is? If it doesn't work you can then keep going and paint it all out....

I've got exposed beams in my house too, and leave them dark (for now)

Re your room, I would start with taking everything except the ceiling beams and perhaps the srround around the fireplace nook back to white (or off white/choice of light grey etc) and see if that brightens it?

The bricked up doorway is - interesting?

As is the sofa with its back to the room - I get it - its for the view - but its also odd from the room point of view.

I think you have to be guided by the floor, is that a recent addition? Personally the bricks are lovely and the style of the room seems to suggest lots of options, but the floor if it's staying is the main think that need to work with things.

Dark beams can be shot blasted back to their natural colour but it can be a bit messy. Another option is painting the dark wood white or a nice taupe which sits well in traditional properties.

I would lighten up the the whole fireplace as the would is too dark and so artificial being glossy. I painted the brick in different shades took away the glare of the brick and pointing. Shame about the flooring
