Shower panels gone wrong

Hello! my bathroom fitter has fitted my shower panels the wrong way. They are tile effect and so I wanted them horizontal. He claims i didnt specify which way round and that shower panels always go vertical.

He hasn’t even finished the job and isnt taking any responsibililtyresponsibility . I also have no proof of requesting them to be fitted horizontally.

My question is, can the panels be safely removed and re-used to be fitted again they way i want them? I can’t afford another £180 for new panels plus pay him twice to fit.

Any thoughts welcome.

If the panels go floor to ceiling with no joints across as they are now, then i would presume that is the correct way to install them.

A horizontal joint is going to be trouble IMHO, at best visible, at worst collecting water.

Free standing baths are only suitable for larger rooms where you have the ability to position the bath with free access all the way round, I regularly remove them from smaller bathrooms when doing re-fits, people like the aesthetics of the free standing bath and plough ahead and install them against a wall, the result is a disgusting accumulation of dust, fluff, pubic hair etc, this will happen quite quickly and you will regret having gone down this route. The concept of having the bath with no curtain is interesting though, in a bathroom around 2.1m square, most of the bathroom will be effected by splashing, the room will need a wet room floor former, and will require that the whole room is tanked prior to tiling, have a look at. (http://www.wetroominnovations.com) I usually use their Maxus formers and Purus gully traps. you can indeed get a flexible waste connection, have a look at McAlpine "Flexcon" range, these are available through any reputable merchants, these are quite substantial and would stand up to semi regular movement, if your free standing bath is an acrylic bath it won't be too heavy, so moving it would be quite straight forward, but I would suggest having small felt pads on the feet to protect the tiled surface, also from a drying point of view, Karcher have a very good little gadget for cleaning windows, which vacuums up the water, I often mention it to clients and any who have bought one have been delighted at how easy it is to use, it will leave the floor almost dry once you have used it, one note of caution would be your choice of floor tile, you will need a porcelain tile that has an R rating, this is a slip resistant rating and would be most advised. another note of caution, because the splashing will not be controlled, any vanity or wood based furniture will deteriorate. I have original 200 year old wide bead and butt panelling boxing in a stairway. Oddly enough it is horizontal. It goes with a one of a kind door at the bottom of the stairs that has panels that are sort of triangular. Of course I shall keep both and will include some similar panelling in the house but in moderation. I had considered it for the bathroom but I fall on the side that thinks it will be a maintenance problem. It would however be great in a cloakroom, painted of course.

Hi, I'd definitely keep your feature bath. This can be painted in a nice Fired Earth Eggshell finish. I can't comment on your basin or wc, as I can't see them and have no idea what condition they are in? I'd tile the floor, shower areas and window reveals. I'd suggest upstands (skirting tiles) around the rest of the bathroom, then you can add some nice colour to your bathroom your painted bath will be a lovely feature. Have a look at some of my photosets which may give you some inspiration. Having said all this, I think your budget is unrealistic. The most important component in your new bathroom is the person who undertakes the work and this will cost you money. Good luck with your project. Jeremy

Worktops I agree are fine and usually an upstand or splashback would be fitted to cover any gaps from uneven walls, End panels should not require that much filler when fitted and it looks as if the kitchen level could have been dropped a little and this will also get over the gap under the plinth. I thought the plinth was not only to cover the void under the units but it also provides added support to the base units when loaded up to help spread the weight and really should be fitted with a 5 mm or less gap so they can be removed if needed. pipe outside is not fitted properly as over time this will sag as there are no fixings to the wall to hold it in place, and the fact the appliances won’t fit says to me that the kitchen was not set out correctly from the start or there is a fault in the design. If I were you I would be going back to the company demanding these things are corrected. I hope you get it sorted and can enjoy your new kitchen soon.

Just finished our bathroom using shower panels which were fitted vertical, would assume this the correct way if fitted horizontal surely would collect water!

Have you got the name of the panel that you bought? As others have said - they usually go vertically, so your fitter is probably correct. However - I guess there’s always a chance that yours are different. If you didn’t discuss this in detail with your fitter, he’s probably done them correctly. I’ve had a quick Google and have found similar panels to yours that seem to be fitted in the same way with the tiles running vertically.

Looks like you’re just gonna have to learn to love them the way they are.
In any job you can never do enough detail. Then write it down and get
both sides to sign off on it.
