odd window in living room

Anyone got any good ideas for this window in living room… the other side is hallway. We are currently renovating and don’t know what to do with it. It’s obviously a bit odd but I quite like it and think it’s part of the history of the house. However my partner and interior designers think it’s best to put a new faux wall thereto board it up and put panelling on that wall… I’m not against the idea but it does make room a little lighter and again is apart of the story of the house.

I don't think it's too bad. I'd put a shelf of books underneath it to draw even more attention to it.

What I do think is strange is the picture rail, which looks out of place and doesn't work well with the window. I'd remove that.

Yeah I think the coving looks weird too… not sure whose idea that was! Although I think removing it is probably more hassle than it’s worth. Would probably have to remove the lining paper and replaster etc… but thank you for confirming that the window isn’t that bad!

Hi. I think you have to arrange it so there are two separately zoned areas - but it can look cohesive. You need flexibility and ample room to be able to walk around the furniture for access to the doors. Do you use the fireplace? Assuming you do, I would suggest an L-shaped couch with the L under the window to the left of the fireplace and the back of the couch in front of the french doors to the outside, built-in bookshelves/TV on the long wall to the right of the french doors, a large rug in front of the couch with coffee table, an armchair facing the couch on the other side of the fireplace and then a separate sitting area - two chairs and a little table - in front of the large window. If you have something to look at out there, have the chairs face out, if not, have them face in. If you keep all the furniture with a low profile and similar colour scheme and have the chairs and armchair easily moveable/slidable then you can pull all the furniture up together when you have large numbers of people sitting around the fireplace or watching the TV. Lamps can be added at the end, but probably one in the corner next to the smaller window and then one or two down the other end near the large window. Yeah Louise I've had a look and they are expensive. I've made my decision now and am going for wide wooden venetians on their own. I've wanted them for quite a while just wasn't sure if they would be ok on their own. After looking at lots of pics I think they will look great. going to a Hillarys store later and they offer a measuring service or I can measure them myself and go via the web-blinds site so much cheaper to do that. Going the whole hog and getting them for the whole house. Really appreciate everyone's time thanks to all of you.

Nice room. As the seating area isn't wide I would choose a chair that doesn't visually fill the space like this rattan one which will also add texture. I'd move the white cube to where the bags are. I can't work out what's next to the black vase on the floor but I'd put it on the cube. Add some tall faux stems in the black vase. I don't think you need anything else on that wall, I'd just pull the floor lamp into the room more. I would however change your cushions to add both pattern and texture. Is there any colour in the room?

This may sound like an odd proposal but how about dividing the space with the TV unit? Have the sofa and TV in the same orientation as option 2 - but moved down the plan so the sofa is in front of the radiator and move the desk area behind the TV. You may need a TV unit that will hide all the cables from the TV and protect it from being knocked over. Just a thought. Good luck.

It's the coving that makes it look odd. Even if the window is removed or boarded over, you'd still need to remove or replace the coving.

Is it a sixties or seventies house? It looks like the window is originil and the coving not. They don't really work together so maybe lose the window. Pesonally, I like it and would prefer it over the coving. It depends on what the rest of the house is like.

Thanks everyone… still unsure. I just think it’s such a big job to do and finding trades people at the last minute to do the job seems to be the hardest part! The house is a Victorian property… but that section of the room was originally another room and a wall was taken down to make the living room larger.

If this house is Victorian then this 1970s window is not part of the history - it is an assault on the original architecture and it cuts through the period style coving.

Even if you have to wait for a tradesman, getting rid will be worth the wait.

Sorry to jump on your post but it could be worse, it could be this big!! For a second I actually thought about keeping ours and putting some glass in it after watching a George Clark and seeing an interior window but soon changed my mind 🤣. I can't wait to get ours filled in as it's holding up the decorating.

Hi Daniel,

I'm with a few of the answers here actually - I like the window, it's kind of unique with it's offset position however like others have said the coving draws the attention away from the feature window and instead you're looking at why the coving has been done like that.

I think the amount of light you gain from the window helps make it worth it and I would be tempted to make the window even more of a feature.

We all jump to box in and cover over hatches/unique features and windows, but these features make our properties special and different. As soon as you remove the quirks you could be inside a newbuild with a square room, no coving, plain skirting etc.

Good luck with the project, I'm sure I speak for most when I say, I would love to see the end result. Please do share some pics.
