Floor boards sanded and restored -is this normal?

I have had my pine floorboards restored and
I’m disappointed with the outcome of the stain/varnish but wondering if it’s my unrealistic expectations.
There are lots of boards that have stripes on the edges. The sanding was done yesterday and he left colours for me to chose, I chose a very dark stain but this has come out a lot lighter except for the stripes on some of the edges.
Is this due to uneven sanding? Or did he put the varnish on too soon after the stain (the stain and 2 coats of varnish were applied and finished by midday today). Or is this just me having unrealistic expectations !

Floorboards often "cup" (edges bend upwards) a little, and that means when sanding them back, more material is taken off on the sides than centrally in the board, exposing more "virgin" material. This could take a stain more strongly than parts of the board where more of the weathered surface remains. Also, wood is a natural material with variations; the way the boards haopen to be sawn (i.e. how the annual rings fall - more perpendicular or more aligned with the surface) , as well as the part of the trunk the board is from (heartwood or sapwood) makes a difference how strongly the wood in between will absorb a stain.

Could they have been more thorough and, say, applied a 2nd stain coat ? Maybe so, and if you clearly expressed that you expected a very dark look then they sure should at least have asked. I'd not dare to predict how much a 2nd stain would have helped to be honest, but from previous experience varnishing a pine floor, how things look on a sample board/piece will not reflect "how it'll look everywhere". (All that said - to me the floor looks very nice - neatly laid, no gaps, straight and even-sized boards)

Hi, For some reason, my answer was cut off before I'd finished it! Sorry, You have some interesting questions. Personally, unless you have experience of floor sanding, I think that it's best left to the professionals. Whilst you can hire exactly the same sanders that they use, it is very easy to damage a floor by pausing too much when changing direction and creating a dip in the floor with the large belt sander. The edging sanders are pretty easy to use, the problem is that it will take an absolute age to sand a floor with them. Normal smaller or DIY type sanders simply won't create the same quality of finish and you will be there for ever trying to do a whole floor. Hiring professionals to sand the floor shouldn't be particularly expensive and will certainly be cheaper than replacing any damage that you do to the floor trying it yourself. I agree, there would originally have been just one cast iron spindle per stair. The newel post would have been wooden I think and you'll be able to pick up a new, traditional style pine one from any timber merchant, probably less than £100. It's a shame that the 'bullnoses' have been cut back but if it was all sanded down and painted or varnished to blend in I don't think it would look wrong at all. The alternative is to get a joiner to make up bullnose profile pieces to attach to the end of each tread, but you'd have to paint them as the wood wouldn't match the original. Replacing every tread would cost a fortune. The banister rail will sand down with a bit of hard work and probably be a nice piece of wood underneath that you can varnish. It'll look lovely once it's done, you'll have to post 'after' picture for us!

A solid wooden floor can be the centrepiece of a traditional home. Solid wood gives the home a certain warmth, character and charm; however, some wooden floors have been unfortunately neglected. One of the main benefits of a solid wood floor however, is that if it does get damaged by scrapes, scratches or dents, it can be restored to bring it back to looking as good as new – which isn’t possible with laminate wooden flooring. We have some tips for those of you who are ready to give their old floor new life. Like polishing a beloved pair of leather boots, expect to get your hands (and in this case, knees) dirty as you restore the former glory of your solid wood floor. Fine-tuning your space Clear your working area by removing all furniture and flooring obstructions – make sure to get help lifting all furniture rather than dragging it across the floor. From skirting to skirting nothing should get in your way, so take advantage of this rare chance to clear beneath skirting boards. Take care and avoid dragging anything, wait for help otherwise you risk scraping your beautiful wooden floor or damaging it even further. Around the walls and even fireplaces, you may have television cables and other tiny obstructions. It is vital you remove these and check for any nails or deep scratches in the wood. Sanding your solid wood floor Ideally, at this point, you will hire a floor polisher, if not get your knee pads at the ready. Hand polishing the floor will reveal the floor’s former glory by removing deep set scratches and dents. It will obviously take off any paint or varnish applied to your floor also, so this job is a large commitment with multiple stages before it is finished. For the best results, tackle a small section first then follow up with the hoover. Working section by section minimises how much of the scattered wood returns to the cracks in the floor. Do not use a broom, you will push the dust into the cracks, and the result will be an accidental mosaic effect. Flooring finish Once your floor has been sanded down it is prepped for finishing. When selecting a finish, you can choose between a variety of options, such as brushed, oiled or lacquered, each giving different results. Determine if your floor is a hand scraped or brushed finish before choosing a flooring finish. Regardless of which finish you choose, note the different times the varnish takes to dry. Give your floor at least 24 hours to dry before walking on it or replacing your furniture, and for at least the first week only walk on the floor in socks, as boots and shoes may affect how the varnish dries. Deep Clean Once your floor is restored to its beautiful original state, keep it that way with regular care and maintenance. Regularly deep clean the floor removing ground in stains or dirt. Any marks from oils, soaps and polishes should be tackled with purpose made floor cleaner. If you use homemade cleaners or harsh chemicals, you risk damaging the floor and its finish – undoing all your previous hard work. Floor cleaners are designed to dissolve what lies on the wood, not harm the wood itself. Tips for restoring a solid wood floor Dry & Hoover Remove excess water with a soft cloth, drying by hand as opposed to a mop which gives you a chance to check your cleaning up close. Take time to spot clean, after all, if it’s not clean it will be further exposed post buffing. To ensure your floor retains its shine, put felt covers on the bases of tables and chairs. Such a small expense could preserve the state of your solid wood floor and reduce the amount of times in your floor’s lifetime that you need to refinish it.

Removing existing pine floorboards, installing plywood and re-installing old pine floorboards would be very unpractical and you would end up with an old pine floor. Then of course you need to sand it, fill the gaps and finish the pine boards. It will be time consuming and expensive. Unless you really like the style of old pine floorboards, I think you should go for a new floor. You can chose between a variety of different styles, colour and materials. If want to go for parquet I suggest to use small herringbone or like 90x360mm or similar as longer planks will look too big in small spaces. Parquet is available in engineered wood, laminate and LVT and prices varies but start from as little as £15 sqm for laminate. Alternatively you may want to look at planks again in laminate, LVT or engineered wood with prices starting again at around £15 sqm. LVT is probably the most durable solution but the subfloor i.e. your old pine boards must be very flat and sound. Engineered wood and laminate both herringbone/chevron and planks can be installed either glued down to your existing floor or over an underlay. Both installation method will take care of draught. Consider lighter tones and the same material throughout if possible. hope this helps

Same! I've also just had my floors refinished, and I think I like yours better. Pine will always pick up colour unevenly, especially old pine. However, the uneven colour is part of the character of the floor, and what distinguishes it from something artificial like laminate or a brand-new floor. And I think if it was darker you'd lose too much of the beauty of the graining.
