Fireplace help please :)
I have recently bought a house and this is the fireplace in the dining room. I dislike it and want to remove it... Any suggestions with what to put in its place. I think a log burner will be a bit too expensive and probably will not get used as it is in the dining room as opposed to sitting room. Should I remove the whole mantel also? Or keep and paint it? ideas welcome as I am completely lost!

Comments (11)It seems like a lot of surround for not much fireplace. I think it may even look out of proportion if you add an extra surround and/or mantle. If you like a quirky retro style you could make this work by matching in the red colour on the wall and adding retro furniture and accessories. However, if you are more inclined to classic styling I don't think trying to paint or up cycle it somehow will really work. Get a quote for a classic fireplace and slate hearth you may be able to find a reclaimed one. It'll cost more than a quick fix, but you will get what you want and not have wasted money on something you may still hate after a face lift. Comments (3)Hi, Yes the chimney is still open and a wood burning stove option is a route we're looking to go down. Just not sure about the finish. Comments (5)Another thought would be to balance it visually by adding a false display of wood stacked up in a recess. A mantel shelf could then span the entire width providing a visual divide. The upper portion could take an art piece or mirror across the section with out looking unbalanced....See More

If you’re removing the fireplace you should definitley remove the mantel as well even if you’re going too reuse it. You’ll want to knock it back to brick first to see what you‘re working with before deciding how to dress it.

Has somebody covered part of the marble?Although it may be slate mimicking marble?
I rather like it too. i think wooden surrounds may be better suited as on the link. You should also be able to pick up replacement tiles for the hearth quite easily, if not antique then they do repro ones. It seems a shame to remove it unless of course you really hate it!
