I will say, for as easy as it sounds to just throw everything you love into a space, it’s actually one of the hardest looks to do really well – that’s not to discourage you of course because when it all comes together, it’s incredibly satisfying! While it may be tempting to just include everything you like from all different styles together in one space, the resulting feeling will be one of over-stimulation and confusion. So the secret of this seamless integration requires creativity and some self-imposed boundaries. Sticking with a structured colour palette will give the room cohesiveness without making the room flat and uninteresting. Start with a neutral base for your larger pieces, your paint colours and/or your flooring as a means of grounding the space. Pay attention to how pieces relate to one another and how they relate to the room as a whole. One oversized piece is absolutely fine but 3 or 4 will make the room look cluttered and uncomfortable. Despite using mid-century hoop chairs alongside a more traditional chesterfield in my own living room, the backs of the chairs are of similar height to the low-lying sofa back. There is continuity of the eyeline and nothing jars too dramatically. You also want to ensure that when borrowing from different eras, you mix and match throughout the space – having a mid-century console table with art of the same era hanging above it and then a Victorian style fireplace with an ornate mirror in a different part of the room is going to look ‘off’. Take that artwork and hang it above the fireplace instead and perhaps use the more ornate mirror above the console table instead! Hope that helps!

Dark green bedrooms are wonderful! I have 3 of them here in different hues: grey-green (Squid Ink by Paper Library), blue-green (Inchyra Ball by F&B), and dark green (Symphony M439 by Tikkurila), which is not dissimilar to the Jotun colour you picked and available in the UK. Nb: I also painted the ceilings with the same colours. I find dark bedrooms so restful and appeasing. Unlike most posters, I am not always sold on contrasting light coloured wood with dark wall colours, I prefer either a natural rich wood colour (walnut, rosewood, mahogany or more exotic woods like sapele) or painting units exactly the same shade as the walls - but it’s a question of taste.

Hi Simon Looking at your floor plan there seems to be a lot of under utilised space and i am guessing from the first floor plan that there will be sky lights down the left hand side of the extension? Have you considered moving most of the kitchen to the left hand side so your counters are under natural day light. You could sacrifice any top units for open shelving to maximise the light/view. Also may sure you have at least 1 unit space of worktop either side of sink and hob. If it is possible, perhaps a bigger utility could be gained by moving the dividing wall between the SRR and the hall??? Alternatively a cheaper option could be to install a wall of floor to ceiling cupboards in the SRR (kinda like a false wall) that you can hide everything away in (you could even include a large airing cupboard) The opposite wall could be a mix of shallow units, open shelving, a desk if needed or maybe library/reading area and lots of greenery? Think of the SRR as becoming a glorified grand hallway – keeping the middle clear will ease the flow and also give you a decent indoor exercise space? Lighting will also be very important in this area – maybe a mix of ‘daylight’ effect bulbs and also mood lighting/lamps for when you want it more cosy. Borrow a small table - or get a large box - and try it out. I grew up in a house with a kitchen smaller than that and 5 of us sat around a round table every night for dinner. It had two little folding sides so one side got folded down to push it back against the wall when not in use. I'd look for a round table rather than square/rectangular as they are easier to squeeze past - think about how small a cafe table is, to get an idea for how small you can go - just need space for a plate and a glass each - search for a drop leaf round table to get ideas. Once we were all sat down, there was minimal room for movement, but it did work - because it had to!
