Front of house replace windows and door..

Hi all..

We are looking for window/door ideas/inspiration to make the most of the lovely views from the semi det house we have bought. Although the photo shows the front of the house, the door is never used as an entrance - just access to the garden. We would really appreciate any feedback. Thanks !

Beautiful view. It’s a traditional house so calls for traditional timber windows not UPVC ones, nor do you require coloured lights in the top. Although you might want a view the design of those windows could be better. Split the big panes up into sections.

Is the reason you don’t use the front door because it’s awkward to use it because of having 2 doors? If you have no plans to use the door in the image I would be tempted to get rid of the outside doors and just have the inner doors as it will provide you with a covered area.

Thanks for your comments Daisy.. Splitting the big panes up is not something we would have thought of and will definitely look at.. The full row of houses are used in a back to front way because the fronts border a golf course.. the rear is used for entering and leaving, for post and deliveries.. so the usual 'rear' garden/patio area is what you see in the photo. The outer door I think acts as a weather shield - the house is completely exposed to the elements!

We went with Solidor: http://www.solidor.co.uk/our-doors Very happy with it, 48mm thick with a wooden core, feels nice and solid/secure compared the hideous UPVC door it replaced. Although it should be noted I hate UPVC.

I agree with darker - I think the reason the light door PP posted looks good is the style. A light colour with a modern design wouldn't have the same effect. This a Cromwellian house in Herefordshire fitted with one of our stainless steel Letterplates and the door colour looks great with the black and white. The porch timber is paler than the rest of the house timbers (you can just see the black window frame to the right) and is a modern addition but as it's still a shade of grey it all works well together. Hi Sharon Laughlin, I would usually like to actually see the space and front window to be able to answer 100% ...but I can tell I have proposed this layout on several similar properties layout packages as it is a very good use of space and the times you use the space actually means it isn't too bad with 'on lookers' or lighting to have it this way round. Choosing the right window dressing can help with any concerns but having a great and usable space inside (where you live) is vital. I would be happy to take a quick look and offer an opinion (free of charge) if you wanted to email me your plan and a picture of the room (gina.everett@createperfect.co.uk). I know it seems like a head ache now.. but it will be worth the additional consideration time in the long run rather than just settling for something because it is the 'norm'. All the best, Gina

Thanks for all comments. I like PWJ architects idea, but think our space would not do that door justice. I love the bi-fold acoustic fabric panel and will investigate that further. I do want to replace the door with something as an add on porch, no matter how well insulated, will always allow a cold or hot bank of air coming into the hall.
