Bathroom layout help needed please!

Evening everyone! I'm looking for some help with the bathroom layout in my house renovation please. This is our first house and so we'd like as much advice as we can get.
Our space is 1900×2500 mm and our builder said we should try to fit both a freestanding bath and separate shower in. My husband thinks we'd need a curved shower enclosure with sliding doors to maximise space (ideally I'd have liked a frameless rectangle shape with a hinged door). We think we may have found the best placement for everything but can't decide where to fit a heated towel rail.
Please help if you have any better ideas for layout.

Is the separate shower a must have?

Certainly fills up the room.

It feels a little cramped to me as your access to the bath is so restricted.
I’ve just put this layout together that might be worth a try. (it would require a slightly smaller bath)

if you can, get some boxes in there to represent furniture and move around it before committing to anything.

Also, are you planning a freestanding bath and tap?? this might look squashed in and therefore make the room feel smaller (also really hard to keep it clean round the back) I would consider a back to wall bath with the space you have.

re towel rail, bit stumped on that too, could it go behind the door??

We are still working on our new house, there is currently a bath with a glass half screen that is totally useless. The water bounces off whoever is showering past the screen and over the toilet, the floor, the ceiling, and it's only a half tiled wall so the wallpaper is peeling. I've considered the P or d shaped baths which give a larger section at one end in which to stand when using the shower and I've seen there are matching curved glass screens to go with them. Two points to consider. 1. If you are not planning on staying a shower could be a good selling point, the water saving of a shower versus a bath. Our last bath hardly saw a look in during 16 years and although it was a lovely deep double ended steel bath it gathered dust and the shower was definately the go-to choice. 2. I am now considering the usability of the bathroom for an elderly relative who has had a stroke, likes baths, but may not be able to get into, or out of one, with dignity intact. I'm thinking that a large walk in shower with additional wall jets could be a good option and the upscale could be a wow factor. Although you may not be in the same position you can never have enough forward planning.

As Jonathan says, you start with the Soil pipe, and if you've agreed with your bathroom fitter that he's able to put the pipe across the wall behind the toilet and under the bath to get to the outside wall, then that's fine, but if not, you really need to discuss it with a professional. There are many reasons and regulations that you need to stick to with regards placement of soil pipes, because sometimes you need access to unblock them. When designing a bathroom, it is important to know where you have to have some items and then decide where you can put the other items that you want. Check the soil pipe situation as this dictates where everything else can go. I suspect unfortunately, that if you can't solve the soil pipe problem and the toilet needs to go on the outside wall ( which is the normal place for it ), then you may have to have a re-think and possibly change what you have purchased. I've tried to have a re-jig with what you've purchased and moving the toilet to it's normal position, but i can only make them fit if you do what Jonathan suggests. Even then, I would suggest that the door be moved along the wall to accommodate the tall unit. You will have pipework from the vanity that you need to box in, it can go under the bath, but at least it's just water not the soil pipe. I would have also considered a bath to fill the whole gap of 2000mm not a 1700mm, but you can use the gap to build a space at the end both covering the pipes and giving you somewhere to stand toiletries. The taps for the bath aren't marked, so i'd probably put them on the bottom end nearest the vanity on the flipped plan below.

It used to be a bathroom and separate toilet (as the second plan which is the house next door and has the original layout) and I want to put it back to how it was. It is not going to be a bedroom. I cannot put in a toilet downstairs as there is not room. There is a cupboard but it is the only storage in the house so I cannot get rid of it and it opens into the reception room anyway.

I know you said you don't want a mini basin in there (and if it's the room on the right of the plan, it looks like you have plenty of space), however, I wanted to point out that there are some really nice cloakroom size basins available. We had a v small space (about 1500 x 1700) and have fitted a toilet, bath and basin in it. The roper Rhodes basin we have is really nice and fits perfectly (photo of it - apologies for cleanliness - below!)

Our bathroom is similar layout except the loo and shower are the opposite way round. I hate it. It's a nightmare cleaning around the freestanding bath (basically impossible). It feels crowded and the shower is too small. If we had the budget to refit it, I would (a) install a pocket sliding door and (b) have an L/P shaped bath with shower over it. I think as long as there are no mobility issues with climbing into a bath to use the shower, that's the best way forward in a small bathroom

Our planned new bathroom had the same layout as your proposed scheme. Our room is the same length as yours but a little wider (2500 x 2200). We would’ve loved a separate shower but having mocked it all up with cardboard boxes it all felt way too cramped. We even tried the alternative layout suggested by Becci but in the end, we decided to stick with an over bath shower - not what we longed for but it just worked better given the room dimensions and the position of the door. Good luck making the decision.
