Too many options !! Help !

I'm all out of ideas but I realise lighting is SO important, I really want to get it right. I've attached a very rough floor plan ( the yellow indicates natural light sources - 4 x 1m square rooflights plus a 3.6m set of bi-folds as marked. The kitchen is approx 6m x 6m.

There's really only one run of units with reeded glass wall cupbaords above ( which will be internally lit and beneath) with an AGA in the middle of the run, plus a 2m x 1 m island with a small 2 ring induction hob for when we have to turn the AGA off in the summer ( usually about 4 weeks - typical English summer !) .I've also marked where our curent table is which seats 6 but I don't really want to commit to being there - so just to give an idea roughly of where it will be. The room is roughly 6m square and west facing so it has good natural light.

Ideally I'd like lighting over the island plus a pendant arrangement over the kitche table. I haven't got a clue how many recessed spot lights I'd need or where to put them. Any pointers ? Also are there any good showrooms to visit within the M25 that anypne can recommend ?

Hi,

At Litecraft we have so many different lighting options. We do have a store in Manchester City Center that you could take a trip to and have a browse around.

In respect of downlights, these can be placed under your kitchen cupboards providing illumination to your kitchen sides. I wouldn't want to many in the kitchen if you are going to use pendant lights too.

How did you resolve the kitchen wall lighting in the end?? I would be really interested to know what you did and whether you are happy with the result, as I am in the process of purchasing a house with exactly the same set up on the wall where the hob is, and am wondering how best to create ambient/task lighting over that worktop.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Gabby. I wasn’t sure whether this type might lead to flickering if the kitchen got too steamy / moist. I had one in a bathroom years ago and it used to do that but it could have just been the quality of the light fitting...

Smart bulbs are definitely worth looking at. I use Hive (which I initially got to control my boiler but expanded into other things). You’ll need a hub, but you can control lighting schemes really well, including when you’re not home. There are a lot of choices out there and, so far, I’ve used ES27, bayonet and GU10s. I have basic dimmable, tuneable (which go from warm white to bright cool white, and colour change). To further make use of the system, I’ve used movement and door sensors to turn lights on and off automatically and plugs to operate other devices. All these things enhance security and make it more comfortable for my dogs - nervous chihuahuas - in the winter if I’m not home before dark. I’ve also had LED fittings which claim to last thousands of hours but have had to replace them in less than 2 years. Fine if they’re the cheaper end of the scale, but I wouldn’t spend any more than £25 based on my experience.
