Any ideas on beautifying a 1970s Chalet Bungalow?
Comments (16)Following on from radicalman's comment, even if you can't afford to do everything at once, ask the architect to draw up exactly what you want to achieve and to set it out so you can do it in several logical stages if need be, so you end up with a cohesive whole. You'll save money that way and end up with a pleasing whole. - someone I know has spent a fortune on their 70s bungalow doing loads of separate projects: add a conservatory, convert the loft, new kitchen, make the garage into a utility room, patio behind the house, fountain in front(!) change the windows and sadly, despite having spent a fortune over the years, has ended up with a sad looking bungalow containing a warren of small rooms and no flow whatsoever....See MoreHelp me with floor plans - modernise bungalow
Comments (16)After getting inspiration and ideas from your layout, I threw a budget out the window and started asking myself what would I do if money was no object. I started by tackling one of my bigger issues with the house - the 1970's facade. See front elevation view of house as it stands now: Current Facade: The layout below modernizes the face of the house (something I didn't think was possible) by making the main entrance on the ground floor - the 'Wow factor' comes from a double staircase on leading up to either the main hall or the sitting room, double height single pane windows mean both staircases are visible from the outside (Also letting tons of light through). The ground floor entrance is large enough to be used as a separate living space by itself (which is no harm as the staircase into the sitting room reduces its size. The only planning changes are to the centre section of the front facade. Updated Facade and Layout: Thinking the new front would look well finished with stone. Per your advice the fireplace is now moved to the side of the sitting room leaving a large centre window and the kitchen is now utilising the old utility space by removing the old kitchen W.C I also took the advice on Bed 3 but I have left the original master as is. The hotpress is now in Bed 3's old ensuite. I couldn't even hazard a guess on the cost of works detailed above........See MoreKerb appeal challenge!! 1970's bungalow
Comments (42)Thanks very much Carolina for taking the time and trouble to do the mock ups. They really help. I like the orange, green and yellow. Would you do the side double timber gates in the same colour as the front door or match them instead with the oak window frames? Colourhappy - yes the house design is that way. Its ok to say it 🙂. In terms of the front garden, I'm thinking along the lines of a coastal gravel garden scheme with structured shrubs combined with herbaceous flowering/ foliage plants....See MoreIdeas to modernise 1970s bungalow
Comments (6)Living has moved away from seperate kitchens, so it is easy to see why your thoughts go in that direction. It seems natural to swap the kitchen with the dining room and then extend at the conservatory end to have an all weather room. A utility could then be in the old kitchen, allowing the thought to take the toilet door out of the hall and into the utility for a better entry area. Something for consideration though is that with everything 'open' along that side sound will travel, so maybe broken plan could work. Kitchen dining with a full height opening to the lounge area but maybe not the full width of the room. There are probably many innovative ideas for your space, but gathering a good idea book of what kitchens/living spaces you like will help form your ideas....See MoreGraham Jones
