Design Dilemma Kitchens

L shaped kitchen diner

We're buying a house where the kitchen diner seems a decent size but its L shape with windows and doors which limit options. I not sure the current arrangement gives enough worktop space but its all new so dont wanr to rip anything out. Really keen to hear what others would do with it.

Hello Louise, There's several ways you can add to existing arrangements with either choosing a wall or a section to paint a green colour.. Or add colour and wall coverings. Some fantastic green papers around. Complimenting an idea in one space by the introduction of something similar but not exact, is my preferred way of providing continuity.. You reference rather than copy.. Consider things like a tiled panel or splash back in fantastic green tiles.. Green blinds or a linen colour with green border. Perhaps you could introduce soft furnishings and yes green plant material is always good.. It doesn't need to be flowers it could be large leaves in fabulous ceramic ware.. Consider art too like canvases.. If you didn't want to paint any walls or add wallpaper, large oversized canvases or an arrangement of smaller one's in the colour you desire can give you the colour and texture without a complete transformation.. Here's some leafy inspiration for the walls... :)) This one is a personal favourite... This one too... I love it!

Hi, no probs. The thing is with upstairs you are governed by the stairs and the drainage. You can't move either without great expense. To gain more room, better bathroom etc, you would have to sacrifice a bedroom on the right of the plan. Is this an option? The simplest solution is just change the bathroom / toilet and add a shower:- If you need further changes for whatever reason, after all 1 bathroom for four bedrooms isn't a lot, then all I can think of is to split the master in to 2 rooms as it has windows front and back. Then remove the bathroom and make it smaller, giving the bedroom top right a little more room. Make that the master with En-suite and use the bedroom bottom right as the family bathroom. The three smaller bedrooms are an ok size so, in theory could work.

Lots of people make decisions about extending as they think that one route will be less disruption- that’s not always the case and sometimes they end up with an extension that only works for them and the next people don’t appreciate it and won’t pay for it. I think you should choose a layout that works and that adds value and once you are happy with the design consider what cost efficiencies can be employed to make it achievable. Personally I think that your current front gable is nice because it is flanked by roof on both sides and the current utility position being set back adds to the kerb appeal- so I think you should employ a professional to ensure you don’t lose the character. Separately the study could become a fourth bedroom, you could add a front facing box dormer to bedroom 2 in order to increase the size of the bedroom so it is large enough to include an ensuite. Given the current bedroom 1 is under a backward facing gable I expect it would be easier to build out here and keep an attractive roofline.
