Lighting for stairs

We just bought a house and redecorating before we move in. The staircase has a really nice high window where it bends and there is also quite a bit of vertical empty space.

My thought right now is to get a cluster or decorative pendant light to hang down on the mini-landing (at the bend) aligned with the window, but I wonder if we should make use of the rest of the space above the stairs instead or in addition to that. Any thoughts?

It all depends on the interior style you are looking for, and not only that.

Hanging lamps are a good option for decorating corners, between two sofas placed in the corner or on both sides of the bedroom, for example. But I don't think it's appropriate to hang it on the mini playground, in front of the window. It will interfere with your passage on the stairs and it does not look good aesthetically.

There are quite good solutions for lighting stairs, while giving a very sophisticated look.

I don't know if you will change the interior style because I see it is traditional at the moment?

Example 1: If you're looking for a more modern look: A decorative, vertical element on the wall, to the left of the window and recessed lighting low down along the stairs. You can paint the walls with interior texture painting to add sophistication.

Example 2: If you are going to furnish in a contemporary style: You can decorate the walls with vertical lamps and paint the walls with interior texture painting.

Example 3: For a more classic style, I would suggest recessed lighting down low along the stairs and stylish paintings on the walls.

Keep in mind that built-in lighting could also be with a sensor, which is great.

Here is another good idea, in case you want to turn the staircase into a focal point of the entire interior. You could match the colour of the staircase with another accent... for example if the living room is open to the stairs, you could put the same colour sofa.

Hi Am following this thread with interest - I have windows like this throughout my house and am finding it really difficult to decide on suitable treatments. On the upside it means the house always looks light and airy! We currently have a series of temporary roller blinds downstairs which work pretty well, but in the bedrooms we have curtains - although they now cover the radiators so not keen as a long term solution. Would also like to have blackout in the two main bedrooms. Does anyone know if extra wide roman blinds are available anywhere? We'd like an unfussy look. Suggestions and pics most welcome. Thanks.

Is there room for a socket either side of the radiator ( hard to tell from pics). You could then add the shelf with slim table lamps or a radiator cabinet. In terms of the ŵall lights, there seems to be a blank ŵall opposite the cupboard under the stairs? For a light by the front door, (if you do need one there) I think it would need to go over the small piece of ŵall where you have the house keys otherwise the door won't open. There are loads of nice ŵall lights around now so size shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure of your taste in lights else I would suggest some as I love a feature light especially for a hall! If you want something simple you could look at the up/down lighters. I think you can get ones to paint in the ŵall colour. The only thing about a striped carpet is the lines may not match up on the turn so would speak to the carpet company first.

Hi Raiyan, I may be wrong but it sounds like it is a little expensive but isn't too far off, as I suspect this is a 2 day job. You would need an electrician to actually fit the lights. Maybe £200ish per day for him/her. £150ish a day for the builder to make good afterwards. I assume there will be some channeling out for wires so the wall will need to be made good after the electrician has finished, which would make it difficult to do in a day. I am guessing really. If you are in London then the day rate seems to go up too! ... I'm only guessing really, but I find the best way is to get a few quotes. We had piled foundations for our extension and the quotes varied by £80k believe it or not... worth shopping around for peace of mind.

Loving the atmosphere of this staircase. It is dark and the suggestion of the other posts are great ideas. A great alternative would be to fit a pair of wall lights halfway up, keeping the atmospheric feel. With the brass accents of these black wall lights would fit wonderfully with the green finish. Hi Sarah J, congratulations on your new home! A feature pendant light would look lovely. If you like roman blinds, then one would look fabulous on the outside of the window. You could opt for an interesting fabric with pattern whether thats colourful or subtle that brings texture to the area. Hope this helps!

Thank you for all of the suggestions! It definitely gives me something to think about, even outside of just the lighting.

I was afraid the light could be a bit too disruptive there given the ceiling height. I was hoping maybe it would be dramatic instead but the space isn’t quite as large as I keep seeing it in my head.
