Replacing 2nd Front door with window

We have a second front door, seen on the left here, which used to be for self contained flat following a garage conversion before we bougth the house. We want to remove the door and the small window, brick up the lower section and put in a conventional window similar to the window in the bedroom above. I'm concerned that (as with most former garage conversions) this won't look good. Welcome any ideas - ie. should be put a wider window in to fill the space between the main front door, should we add a trelis or some planting, etc should we add a different colour brick below the window, etc.?

I’d be inclined to match the other ground floor window so it looks to be part of the house.

I had my old back door removed and bricked in and added a window. Try to use the same bricks - a good brickie can identify them straight away. My brother is a builder/brickie and he knew exactly which bricks mine were! Although they may not be a perfect match as the original ones will have faded, they won’t look too shabby. I agree with Angie to try and match the window style with the other one. This is mine, sorry about the mess, but hopefully you can see the new and old bricks.

So we finally found an amazing wallpaper shop which had so many rolls to look at that we could have bought the whole shop! Lol. So far we have narrowed it down to 3 - one is damask, one is a gorgeous satin crushed fabric effect in silver grey and the other is a v pale grey fabric effect with glitter. My favourite it the silver grey fabric so far - it looks so luxurious & expensive but is only £20 a roll. Ah I forgot there is a glitch with adding photos, doh! Will post one once decided

Thanks for all comments. I like PWJ architects idea, but think our space would not do that door justice. I love the bi-fold acoustic fabric panel and will investigate that further. I do want to replace the door with something as an add on porch, no matter how well insulated, will always allow a cold or hot bank of air coming into the hall.

I’m with Sonia. I think the oak window frames will always be jarring as they are not in keeping with a period property. I would paint them in a heritage white paint. Sonia has posted great front door pics but these fab colours would not work with the golden oak. I’m not at all sure what would be compatible with them, maybe a stronger colour to balance the very strong statement that the oak frames make e.g. deep green, navy blue or black. Basically, you need to decide what look you are going for: either a return to the period style or a 1980s revamp look. If you are keeping the frames, it makes sense to leave the door frame as well and just paint the door. However, I do hope that you will be inspired by the pics Sonia posted as they are delightful homes and creating a similar look would definitely add value to your Victorian terrace house.

I would but you could do the door a bolder colour if you wish. I found this picture with the palest of grey for the balcony and a darker grey for the door. I also love yellow or berry doors but it’s quite a statement! So much choice.
