Small kitchen and living space help

I need help with modernizing this kitchen and living space. I would like a round dining table here too. But the issue is we would also like a three seater sofa and TV here. Open to suggestions. The cheaper the better.

My first impression is that the sofa is too big for the space. Do you always need to seat so many people? I would consider a much smaller sofa and an armchair or two. I am not sure that a round table will fit in the space. If your current dining table is 700 - 900mm wide then a round table really needs to be about 1200 to seat 4 people comfortably, measure out that size circle on the floor and then add the chairs. You still need a decent walkthrough behind the chairs each side. A rectangular table is the best use of space for that shape of room.

Good morning Aqsa,

Thank you for sharing your renovation project.

Some further guidance and food for thought for your project:

1. We would think about introducing a reflective surface like a glossed ceiling in the smaller area towards the back patio doors to allow for even more light and make the room appear larger (see image below). Seek professional guidance for this installation.

2. The sofa is a beautiful shade, but dominates the space, you might want to include a design which has only only one foot rest rather than two dominating L-shapes to each end of the current set-up

3. By introducing a landscape picture (longer) above the sofa which compliments your overall colour theme, will add some texture to the space and remove the mirror (which is too small for this space)

4. Think about changing the colour of your dining table to a lighter shade, and introducing a rectangular dining table with curved edges to accommodate the curvature you are looking for and look for curvature in the design of the chairs also to create a more streamlined modern design focus. Unless this flat is to be a family home - or you're planning to throw lavish dinner parties, I would seriously consider how much storage you actually need, and perhaps start from what you need, rather than how much you can fit in. The ideas of a u shaped kitchen and a sliding door to the living room I think will optimise your space, and I'm thinking a sideboard in the living room would store your table crockery and cutlery, again reducing what needs to be in the kitchen. Looks like a lovely flat - hope you really enjoy doing it. A last minute thought - you can often get ex display units from top kitchen shops very reasonably priced.

The first thing I would do is get rid of the clutter! Have a tidy and buy some nice storage to throw the kids' stuff in. You should start by removing everything from that half of the room so you can get a feel for all the space you have then slowly move stuff back in. If you can, remove the fireplace to give you more useable wall space. Perhaps replace it with a nice fabric board to stick the kids' pictures to. I assume you have taken that photo from the doorway? I would say that the vocal point of the room is your kitchen table and you should make that a feature with flowers and crockery or even by painting or changing the tables and chairs. I don't think the sofa currently adds anything design-wise as it turns the room into a corridor and doesn't appear to face anything in particular to create a focal point. Can you fit it next to the door so it faces into the kitchen? The lights don't help - they will be casting a stark bright light and are very utilitarian so it would help to change them (some or all) to something a bit softer or on trend. A wooden floor would warm up the room but if you can't do that then put a rug down in that bit by the sofa. The colours of the cabinets, flooring, and sofa make the whole room very beige so you should inject colour with soft furnishings and pictures. Pick 1 or 2 main colours and work from there.

Hi KB, Yes this sounds great for the kitchen so that you have focused task lighting for the prep area and the dining area. In regards to the living area I would always suggested softer more indirect lighting as this will create a softer more relaxed ambience. Opt for wall lights, free standing lamps and table lamps all with LED warm temperature bulbs. If you do want to add a central ceiling light i would definitely recommend adding a dimmer too so the lighting level can be changed to suit the time of day. Your sofa looks modular, can you simply remove some sections to turn it into a three seater?

The sofa was left by the previous home owner. All furniture will be removed. I do want to have a makeover of this room but not too expensive

On the right is your current floorplan, according to approximate measurements.

In the middle i used the existing cabinets, simply guessed their size. Two lower units and the tall units combined on the right hand wall.

And on the left a new kitchen, though the layout could probably use some tweaks/improvement.

I think a bright white paint would lift everything. The darkest I would go is a very light grey. Its a lovely bright space but not with that muddy lilac/brownish shade on the wall.
