should I change these wooden frame windows?

The problem is these windows are very drafty and not that well insulating. However if I plan to change the windows I must still keep the outside wood frame as it is supporting the structure and the window company said pvc is better than aluminium when paired next to a wood frame.

And I’m not such a huge fan of pvc windows as they are very chunky and plastic looking in my opinion.

This is a very unusual window configuration with the fixed panes and then hinged window in the middle. I imagine originally it may have been a sash window in the centre pane? Are you in the uk m, the window latch looks more European to me. I would ask a reputable glaZing company to look at them for you. They could hopefully quote to add double glazed panels to the existing framework? Failing that a good carpenter that makes windows would be able to remake the unit for you. I hate UPVC too it would look pretty clunky. If you have the budget I would ask a wooden window maker to quote to replace it with a central sash and fixed panes either side

The first picture is from the window end looking down to the back window which will become a bifold door. The second is looking towards the window we're considering bricking up & we've put plaster boards up to block it off to help us decide. The next two pictures are the design if we keep the window but the idea of doing away with the window would mean we could have those tall units all along that window wall and then leave the wall to the right as you're facing it free from units. I would still have a view of outside into our small rear back garden where the bofold doors will be. Appearance from outside at the front without a window would be ok. Thanks for your comments.

It depends on your planned floor covering. If you are fitting a Ditra decoupling type membrane and and electric heat mat and using a 12mm tile it might be just about okay, if you are fitting a timber floor then it will need to be at least 18mm thick engineered wood with a decent underlay and you may still need a finishing Scotia. If you were planning to tile straight on top or fit a carpet or thin laminate type timber then it is too low. Your options are to fit levelling compound to bring it up to the required level or of you are planning to tile it your might consider raising the level with tile backing insulation boards which are not much more expensive that levelling compound per mm of built up and have the advantage of insulating your floor (even if you already have insulation bellow the screed it helps) Good Luck Terry www.onthetiles.biz

Thanks for the comments, I read appreciate it. Originally I’d thought as Jonathan and another person suggested painting it in similar colour to front door would look uniform and calm, but I’ve noticed even with my front door - a light colour shows up dirt a bit more, and as I’m on the corner my side seems to get everyone’s wheelie bins lined up. I then thought black or a very dark colour as this would look great with greenery, but I’d be painting it myself so started to realise the effort plus I do like rather like the natural weathered look, so I’m going to leave it natural. Unfortunately landscaper isn’t sure what colour was used so I have to try and get a match for front side gate and skirting under picket fence. Also if I go ahead and paint concrete posts what shade and I presume they’ll stay darker as fences fade.

I would prefer to see a colour too, rather than anthracite - which can turn into a bit of a black hole for a front door. I like a front door to be more interesting than just matching the window frames. Agree that doing the whole thing would be best to maximise the size of the door - especially since it's not huge and it's not centred on the front of the house - so you want it to be really obvious where the door is and draw people to it.

If the frames are not in visibly bad shape, then it might be worth getting just the glazing units replaced, this can be done quite a bit cheaper than doing a whole window. In my opinion, restoration and draught proofing https://surreysashwindowspecialist.co.uk/ is the best option.
