Design Dilemma Gardens

Garden planter needs designing

Hi. I have a 1.6m x 70cm planter that needs filling. I like the smart green plants but I don't know the names of them, anyone can help? Where do I buy these from? and how do I design the layout of them?

Such an idea is so pretty and smart but I don't know any plant and flower names

I suggest you visit your local garden centre and purchase plants that appeal to you. Just ensure they are suitable for containers. The staff will be able to guide you.

First pic look like ferns (the little green ones, and the purple leaf plant looks like a Phormium. The hanging plants in the second pic look like summer bedding, so will add colour throughout the summer but will die off when the frosts arrive, so will need to be repeated the next year. The taller red leaved plant may be a type of Yukka? Have a look at Crocus’s website, they are a very good quality online garden centre. They supply Waitrose. www.crocus.co.uk. They’re not cheap but everything arrives very well packaged and customer service is good. However as Sarah suggests, visiting a good garden centre is a great option and staff seem to know their stuff. You may also see other plants that would suit what you are looking for.

This thread was started by minnie101 in March and her comments at the end of May indicated she may have been by then well advanced in the planning if not the implementation. Doesn't that make suggestions for clearing and early stage design the following January somewhat posthumous? Changing topic to a piece orf growing advice for minnie101: we are now in a new year with a new growing season coming up. Instead of buying new lavendar plants to replace those which are getting leggy annd unkempt, why not look up how to take cuttings from those you have and replace with newly grown, free plants of your own? This will not only work with lavendar but with a huge variety of herbacious plants as well as most shrubs andd, if you have the patience to wait for the results, trees. You need some cheap plastic plant pots and some compost. A trowel would be useful. But you could even use an old spoon from the kitchen and a few empty yoghurt, margarine or other empty, washed packaging tubs with a couple of holes punched in the bottom for drainage. Here's an offer for all you Houzzer folk. If enough people would like to learn how getting free plants from your own cuttings works, I shall write an article for you and post it with a few pictures or drawings for clarity, here on the Houzz site if I can find out where to put it!

Hi Eve, Well done for taking on a design project. Always an exciting challenge and by the looks of it you've done yourself proud. I know it's a bit late in the day to give any suggestions but perhaps you could put them to one side for a rainy day? Looking at your patio layout I would suggest a slight tweak in order to have some coherence with the circular or rather flowing feel you have tried to create. Notice how in my quick scribble I've taken out the sharp corners of the paving by making a curved edge, which is easily achieved by cutting the stone to suit the site, such as natural sandstone or preferably dark material such as slate. To hide the cut edges you can install edging cobbles or blocks with small low profile led lights interspersed between the edging blocks? Please see attached scribble to see what I mean. Second thing and this is of course completely budget dependent is because you already have a lovely stark white fence you might want to consider contrasting that with a dark material for your hard landscaping such as a nice slate or dark black limestone pavers? Hi Ellie, ok I will edit it more as it should read we want all the shrubs and trees removed which is a tall feat when your not qualified I would guess. Also with the council not available to remove garden waste, we already have a lot piling up with the compost awaiting the date for when we can remove it. Our garden already has fence all the way around, however it needs updating as it has broken it a lot of places.
