How can I make this wall look less bare?
Living room/under stairs wall. Struggling to find appropriate decor to make it look less stale but not too busy, especially with the diagonal edge to the left. There is a mirror on the wall opposite. Does anyone have any ideas?

Comments (36)It is quite formal, but by hanging your pictures in a less orderly way, more ramshackle than perfection, might help. more paintings, more photo frames, more personal. if you always have symmetricallly placed things then it will automatically look formal, try being less symmetrical! the room also perhaps lacks some other textures, try something fluffy ( not my normal go to phrase), a couple more cushions in a non- co-ordinated co-ordinate - complicated huh?...something like a woolly burnt orange in a different shape, rectangular or round, even a velvet. it is a lovely room and well considered but often when people design a room they miss tiny details. you are a stones throw away from perfection. please get in touch if you are in the glasgow area and need a wee help finding the perfect thing - always happy to help...See MoreHelp, how do I make our kitchen look less dull? Comments (35)If this is a short term fix, I'd try to find a fabric to tie in those terracotta ties with the off white paint you're using elsewhere and just put a simple roman blind (it doesn't need to work) at the window. Something like this will tie in and has the grey of the floor. We moved last year and I'm sorting out building work - in the meantime I've added nice curtains and blinds and it's meant I don't mind living with it. Comments (7)It looks like you all get the idea. There are no limits, apart from our imagination, to the configurations. I have no idea why they are called jib doors. Does anyone know? I do know from experience though that they work a treat. Many years ago I was visiting Abbotsford the home of Sir Walter Scott. I was lost in reverie taking in the contents of a lovely room when the wall moved and a woman appeared. I quite literally jumped out of my skin! Despite your design dilemma, you have a beautiful lounge - love the colours and the especially the colour of the sofa :)
A few further ideas for you:
1. Textured Wallpaper - You could add some texture to this space - a white linen, faux silk a surface that will add some depth to the wall but kept in a white neutral shade to compliment the blue feature wall. Adding some greenery a decorative planter will also enhance this effect (even without the wallpaper effect)
2. Add a decorative accessory such as a throw ladder (see image below and to the right of the image covered in textured throws)

12 days agoCrying out for a lovely big picture perhaps including some of the lovely colours already in the room. Etsy have a great range of reasonably priced artwork. These are ideas but there are so many to choose from.

10 days agoI also was thinking of something using black metal framing to echo the mirror and other elements. I wonder if just embracing the angled shape by adding new ones might be a good approach. I think adding some greenery via a wall or hanging planter would also work. I’ve attached two pictures of items I’d consider.
