Something doesn't feel right..

I have recently knocked through an interior wall in my terraced house to make a large lounge / dining area. I want to put a Barcelona chair in the corner of the lounge to try and separate the two rooms more. However something doesn't feel right. I am not sure if it is because every wall is white..

Any suggestions?

Love your space- I do not mind the white walls. White can really be cool if done right. It will be the backdrop for all your treasures. I love a Barcelona chair- brown/tan could be really cool. First, what about a new dining light? And lower it and center over the table. This will draw your eye to your dining set, which I love. Then get some modern Roman shades for the window. I love the charcoal ones below. I am not sure the gold mirror is a good fit with your room. I think you need a larger rug in the living area. Then just add more objects to the shelves. you really have a great start.

i would change one of the wall colours in the dining area, this will define each area. Bring the same wall colour into the living room with accessories such as ornaments or cushions. I would not block the two areas off with furniture though as this will make the space seem a lot smaller.

Color would make a major impact. Painting the fire place wall something striking would really make the space and a contrast color behind the shelves would be a bonus. I also like the idea of moving the TV and putting a chair there. It seems that it would help balance the space better. I would also add drapes hanging them high and overly wide to make your window feel larger. A nice centerpiece for your table or just place settings would liven that up and help tie in all colors. And pillows! They can make a room and help tie in all the accent walls and give it a cozy feeling.

Hello Marion, I think the tv can stay but the height of the plant would add to it and give a softer appearance.. Put it in a lovely pot and sit it in front.. Also have you thought about a small dark wooden unit for tv that would compliment the dining table and the sideboard? That would also help.. For the dining area I would suggest a large mirror but you have the tree.. It does look like there was a chimney breast and possibly the fireplace is still there? but has been plastered over and room has been divided since. Again it is hard to see as the pictures are not of the whole room or as much can fit at the angle of the shot. If this is a partition wall could it be removed? It would open out that part of the room. Is the other side of that chimney breast on the other side where the fish tank is? It would mean then that the fireplace is at the dining end of your rooms.. I can just make out a very subtle light fitting.. Is this a pendant and if so can it be lowered a fraction? One last thing.. When you have decided what to paint the chimney breast.. Think of complimentary curtains (mentioned earlier) and cushions and throws for the sofa and chairs to compliment.. : ))

Hi. It's a very pretty room. I'd turn the table the other way and pull it out from the ŵall. I think ŷou need a couple more display shelves of different lengths so they're staggered. Maybe pop a couple of pieces of art on them. I'd pop the plant in the corner and add a couple of green cushions to the bench. Have you thought of pendant lights over the bar? Maybe something in metal? It's hard to see the kitchen but maybe bring in some more of the country elements? The clock frame also looks a little dark so would consider painting it and maybe hang it central to the radiator cabinet?

I see what you mean. The space it's self is just beautiful, but not defined, and has a flat feel to it. I would try changing the wall color. Paint the dining area and find a fun area rug to go under the table. That will also help with the flat feel of the room. Also, the fire place fades into the wall. Have you given any thought to changing the color of the wall its against, or perhaps doing a treatment on the fireplace it's self and leaving the wall white?

I think your space needs color and personality. Like the dog on the shelf with a cone on it's head? am I seeing that right? The table chairs and clock look a bit like a conference room;)

I think that your having a similar dilemma to myself. Love Barcelona chairs and would look great. The thing that people have been commenting on my post is symmetry. I also have a TV that doesn't look right. Maybe you could get a white shelf/ cabinet for the TV to match with your other shelves. Possibly inject a little colour to each chimney breast to tie the rooms together with cushion to match. Just some thoughts, hope they help?

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of changing the wall colours to a light grey or changing both chimneybreasts to a dark grey (I like grey by the way) as I want it to look a bit more masculine. A rug underneath the dining table might be a good idea!

You have a beautiful space, I too just think it needs a bit more personality and colour. Are you dressing the window? I love the dog with the cone on it's head. :)

I would hang the mirror vertically. I would find some real dining chairs, and put a table quilt or something on that table... I would get a cabinet to house your television in this case. I would also get a wonderful area rug to bring it to life.

Thanks for the suggestions - I think adding a little colour will help. And yes for those asking that is a doggy lamp on the shelf and the cone is the light! I love it :)
Any other suggestions would be welcome. Colour of wall, what to put on the shelves, art of the walls...? I am new to all this and struggle with concept ideas.

I have to agree with swapping the clock and mirror. A clock in the dining room is an ambience killer. It is a very smart clock but isn't huge so might look better above the TV. Also I can't help thinking the shelves belong in the living area, too. Perhaps a sideboard would be more useful and make it look more like a dining room? A statement light over the table would also make a world of difference. Love the doggie lamp.

I think what you have already is a lovely canvas to work with. What does jump out at me is the fact that what you do have already on the walls is positioned quite low down and does not emphasise the fact that you have lovely high ceilings. Yes, I agree, would turn mirror the other way but would keep it above fireplace to reflect the room and thus give illusion of more width. I like the olive shade of the cushion in photo and would have that and some more accent colours in there - I personally like sludgy colours - mustards, olive, petrol blues and aubergines - you can afford to be daring with colour. I would keep walls as they are as they will help keep the long room light and airy.
I think Roman blinds would be nice and perhaps curtains as well if budget allows, just to make the room feel dressed. It really is lovely. Have fun sourcing things over time and always keep a few swatches/ pictures with you to match things up! You never know when you may come across something and wonder, 'is this the right shade? Will it 'go''!!!! Good luck with it.

By removing the wall you have created a long and narrow space. Also, all of your furniture is diagonal which further highlights this. Have you considered putting your sofa under the window? This way you could have your Barcelona chair. Also, round table could work better in the space with a feature light above which would also break up the diagonal lines. Then you just need to add your personality into your space which you already got some great recommendations above.

Both of the alcoves in the living room area are pretty much empty at the tops, so it could create balance and focal interest to add white built in shelving (like in the first alcove in the dining room) to put books / ornaments - particularly for the TV alcove if you don't want to do this for both. The TV could stay in the same place but on a deeper (perhaps angled) matching white unit built in beneath the shelves which would keep everything tidy and hidden if you add doors (so remove the wood table) - I'm planning something similar for my living room which is also quite long and narrow. Putting a picture (long landscape) or pictures (multiple portrait) above the sofa would make it more cosy especially as it would reflect on the mirror. A lower and larger feature light in the dining room would also give more focus to that space, and maybe painting everything pale grey or another light colour (keeping shelving and woodwork white) would add a bit more warmth. I like my house cosy though so this may be a bit much if you prefer things to be very minimal!

This has made me chuckle!!! Margo, I saw that Tom had commented after me asking what the home owners did in the end!!! I thought, at first, ' hang on a minute! They have hardly had time to make a cup of coffee and read their Houzz thread!' Then it suddenly dawned on me and I scrolled back to see that this was in fact a two year old thread and I had put such a comprehensive reply on it.... as if my life depended on it! Never mind! Maybe the owner will revisit and post an after pic one day soon!

No not yet! But we have found a builder and architect is drawing up plans - actually have a meeting with local planning office next week to finally see if we need planning permission!
