Need help with our living room / dining room

Hi,

We are moving to our new 3 bed home soon. We spend over a month looking for ideal home in ideal location and not spend a fortune on it. Finally, we found one. It's not ideal but best we could get.

Now I want to ask for your help to arrange our living room / dining room. The problem is that you enter Next room (blue, not arranged) is our dining room. Doors on the right lead to kitchen extension. I forgot to add window on the right wall of dining room.

In the living room we want to have a 3 seat sofa and 40 inch TV on the wall, but we are not sure isn't the room too narrow for this. This is the sofa that we have: http://www.dfs.co.uk/fabric-sofas-all/3-seater-sofa-smudge-100550030p--1

We don't have too much plan for dining room - we need to have a table and 4 chairs there. We need to buy the rest.

We can also move sofa and TV to the dining room and use this front room for... that's the question - what for?

I would be very grateful for any help an advise.

You may have already found all the furniture you need for your new house but we have a dining table and chair set that could well suit your new home and your budget. Congratulations on your new home!! There was never a home built that was 100% sometimes you have to be a bit creative with your thinking.

May I ask where the other rooms are in relation to the ones pictured? Is it possible to put a hallway from that doorway on the bottom left to the blue area? If so you can make the current Living room a bedroom and the blue room the living room then the closest bedroom to the kitchen the dining room.

yes I agree with gravel.....pick a theme and edit out all the things that don't work. Personally I think the room is quite grand and I like the fireplace and windows but think the floor and walls are a little too light. Consider a bolder wall finish and then perhaps change the frames of some of your pictures so they work better together. The room might benefit from pattern. A patterned rug would work and would be practical with children but choose a pattern large enough for this big room. Since the windows are such a nice feature consider leaving them undressed and remove obstructions so that you can see the garden.

Hi. How about this attempt for layout assuming the fire is boarded up? The sofa would be about 8ft from the tv. (There is leg room between the sofas and I drew the coffee table too far away but ignore that!), Tv can go on the wall or on a cabinet or on the wall with a console underneath and art and decorative pieces around it. Personally I wouldn't put the desk by the bay as you'd be blocking light with a screen. Would it work where the table currently is with a desk lamp?If you need storage, I'd put bits away in a cabinet or get a desk with drawers. Cafe shutters would be good or if on a budget wooden blinds can look good or voile blinds. In terms of style, what do you like? Maybe scandi or soft industriał with white boards or a mix of the two or??

Hi Yasemin, I have added a very basic templated 3D model to give you the gist of how I’d lay out the space. Please take no notice of the styling, the templates are just what I had to hand on the computer. So I would use bench seating along the back wall for your dining table seating. This would allow you to push the table back further than you can with conventional chairs and thus keep traffic flow unrestricted through the space. There are a wide range of benches available these days from basic and beautiful wooden constructions (just add cushions if you wish), to sumptuous fully upholstered luxury pieces. There is also room for a sideboard for your tableware, you could create a beautiful sightline out of this by adorning it with table lamps and/or decorative accessories. Some wall art would be great here too. I wasn’t sure what the space was at the other end of the room (with glazed door), is this your main entrance? If it is you will need an outerwear storage facility of some sort. If its not a main traffic route then it could be a lovely space for a desk and study area. Good luck with your new apartment. L :)

We've always found success in moving slowly, bit by bit, and having less in the room for awhile as opposed to more. As an artist, I look at those walls, (love that warm, warm color) and the lighting reflected upon them, and think -- what a great place for a few, well-chosen, and much beloved pieces of art, which I encourage you to have in the back of your mind for future decoration. So often, we get caught up in the furniture and rug details, that we forget the walls, which make up a good portion of our living space.

But that's okay, because the best way to add art to our homes is slowly, after much time of consideration. When you do add art, take your time, and wait for that piece that speaks to you and takes you to a better place -- because really, that's what art is supposed to do. Its value lies not in shocking people, or offending them, but encouraging them and making each day sweeter.

I am appending a few examples of my own art, which is created with that belief in mind: that art should help, and heal, and bring a sense of hope, inspiration, and joy. Congratulations on your new house -- may it be filled with more laughter than furniture, a place where new memories are made each moment.
