My pleasure. I think avoiding wallpaper is a top idea. Having 50 samples and not liking any is a clue! It is such a huge room and wallpaper could look incredibly busy and isn't really the modern look you say you want. Downpipe is great, but I would then have a lighter grey on the top half of the walls and then a chalky white on the ceiling. The cornicing that isn't really cornicing and the other details that are above the doors could then be the same as the top half of the wall or the ceiling - I don't think they should be the same as the bottom half of the walls because, if you look at it now, it chops up the room too much - but that might just be in the photos. You can add pattern in soft furnishings and those giant curtains you are going to have to buy at some point! Here's a picture of what I did in our last house when I decided to embrace the dark and make it cosy. It is a MUCH smaller room than yours, but I used Pigeon and then a Downpipe-ish colour.

I think the picture is fine, it follows the lines of the brick pillars (it may need to to go a fraction to the right but that could be the camera angle but I cant tell if it's hung at the right height as the pic doesn't show the ceiling!)I'd go for brick slips for the hearth. In terms of ornaments you need a couple of things with some height on either side, they could match or not ( if not then get one taller than the other) but I think they need to be at least 2/3 inches higher than the bottom of the picture. I'd also centre the clock. I don't know what your style is but you could try orchids, vases or candlesticks, urns, decorative jars like a ginger jar etc. I think the rhino is too short with the picture tbh, unless you can lower the picture?

Many thanks everybody for your feedback, it’s invaluable, I’d never even thought about the grouting! The tiles are old but don’t have nail marks in the corners so they’re definitely not pre1860. They also have printed images on them, not hand-painted, am I right in assuming Delft was always hand-painted? Looking at the mantelpiece it’s obviously not the original and we’ve just discovered a lovely parquet floor in one of the basement rooms that looks like it’s from the 50s or 60s, so... My guess is the whole apartment had a refurbishment in that period: the parquet floor was laid, new mantelpieces were put in and the tiles added. The fireplace in the parlour has a hearth which is just black, cracked stone and I’m guessing this one was the same and somebody thought they’d brighten it up with some tiles. I’m still not sure what to do with them next though! 🙂

Just think in 50 years time that surround will be a wonderful period feature!! I ripped our equivalent out took a whole day to do it. It was built onto a heap of building rubble which I dug out. I had to add extra pieces of joist and about 10 lengths of floor board to fill the gap. The boards needed lengths of hardboard packing pieces or similar as the new ones are slightly thinner than the original imperial measurements ones. We put a gas fire and commercial fireplace in now 30 years old and this is starting to look dated itself now!!
