Red Cedar cladding - Vertical or Horizontal???

Hi

We're using Red Cedar cladding on the wall to the right hand side of the front door and all along the underside of the overhang but I can't decide whether to have it Vertical or Horizontal.

Any thoughts which would look best?

Vertical, it contrasts with the direction of the stones.

I rather like your facade. I would think twice about painting the brickwork, as this would be a maintenance headache, but cleaning it would brighten it up. Otherwise stucco and paint the front ( brickwork) only? i would clad your existing canopy in lead, but leep the existing shape. Is the tarmac yours? If you could change this to something lighter and softer, this would have a really big impact. Clad the stairs in slate or indian sandstone, get rid of the block screen and replace with glass, ( marine grade stainless steel fittings and door furniture) black iron railing for the steps.

I too would ditch the vertical blinds. Our last house had horizontal wooden cladding that had been replaced with red roof type tiles, overlapping vertically roof style. It was done before we bought the house but looked so much better than the other houses in the street. And didn't need any further upkeep. Having ditched the blinds I'd plant something spectacular in the front garden to soften the view from the road and to give a bit more privacy. Maybe a Japanese maple, which is stunning in the autumn? Always intrigued by how different people have such strong and mixed views on choices like this! No 2 is my personal preference - looks more modern and "integral". I find the other 2 designs look like after-thought bolt-ons and make it look like an older house that's trying to be something it is not. The middle design doesn't feel that way to me. I really like the combination of white render and stone. Rather than painting it white, have you considered using K Rend. These are self-coloured renders, with the benefit of never having to re-paint.

No, trees usually don't grow horizontally, but does that imply we can't have wooden flooring?

I think horizontal looks best because then the slats follow the same orientation up and under the ceiling. Thats what I “see” when I looked at pics, and I think it’s funny the votes are at neck and neck (12v11), clearly there is two ways of doing it equally acceptable so up to you.

Very marginal for me. I think I'd go with vertical as I find the horizontal boards under the overhang a bit busy, it also goes with the doors and windows but contrasts with the stone. I do however like the horizontal lines next to the door as the door doesn't stand out quite so much to me with the vertical planks :)
