If you could change ONE thing in your garden, what would it be?
Comments (32)Hi paulineewilson, to add more interest, you could possible consider lifting a paving slab here and there that won't compromise the main areas you would walk on regularly. Where you've chosen to lift a slab, you could add some fragrant plants such as lavender or herbs that tolerate being trodden on occasionally. The spare slab you've lifted could then be placed further away from your house to create another planting square. into this you could plant one of those tall pencil-thin Italian evergreen trees. Your patio would gain more 3D interest if you used a few plants that are tall and narrow and evergreen. Tall evergreens provide shade in summer and winter interest. I would check with your garden centre the distance you should plant these Italian evergreens trees cannot damage buildings or drains with roots. I'd also perhaps consider making the table area of your patio a curved semi-circle shape rather than have 90 degree angles. I am sure you will enjoy tweaking your patio as the basic design is lovely!...See MoreNeighbour poisoned my garden/ dog /pond
Comments (27)Saying they don't test water for poison if the fish are showing mucus lumps they are reacting to something in the water. To empty pond and thoroughly clean. Putting some dechlorinine hoping the fish pull through. Pictures of my fish with lumps. Top of water showing signs of something in there. Can't believe there isn't support for things like this...See MoreYour home vs. your childhood home?
Comments (21)We lived in a 3 bed semi until I was 11. Half of it faced due north, so there was a room we never ever used. Then we moved to a 4 bed, which we needed, as there were 6 kids. I absolutely loved the second house. It didn't face any direction fully, so it got sun in most rooms at some stage. It was on a turning circle in a cul de sac, so it looked really small from the front, but had an irregularly shaped extension at the side that was completely soundproof.( My brothers could play their music really loudly and noone ever complained). This opened out into a huge garden, which my mother made absolutely beautiful. My parents built two patios in it together and my mother built her own flower bed, using dry stone walling techniques. My parents had lots of midcentury furniture, some of which was made by my father from a book on Swedish design. You could buy the orange sofa he made now! There was a little gazebo in the garden which turned out to be a monk's cell, the last part of the abbey that had been there. A tree in our garden was pruned by a man who happened to have come there as an apprentice tree surgeon, and he was able to tell us that it had had a bench all the way around the inside. It fell down during Hurricane Charlie, as the front wall was leaning, but my father rebuilt it over the course of 9 years. My mother's style is way ahead of her time; their bedroom has been duckegg blue and brown for about 20 years!...See MoreThe nicest thing someone has done for you!
Comments (14)Two weeks after I met him for the first time, my boyfriend's best mate turned up at my place one Saturday, in overalls and proceeded to help me assemble my shed (my BF was at work). When I expressed gratitude for his coming to the aid of a relative stranger, he simply said "you're my mate's girlfriend, so you're my friend, and it helps that you're likeable". That last sounds so throwaway, but I was so anxious that my BF's friends wouldn't like me that I almost cried. He and my partner repaired my patio the next day, and they have done so much work on the house together over the last 2 years. He has refused any kind of payment, other than being fed, so I always make sure that Sunday Roasts, nice takeaways and good BBQs are always on the menu!...See MoreJuliet Docherty
