Biophilic home by the park

On appearance, this modest detached family home is a familiar suburban abode, but step inside, and you’re transported to a pulse-calming, forest-inspired scheme that invites you to kick back and relax. Motivated by the iconic local park beyond the property boundary, I designed a biophilic interior that is both practical for everyday living, whilst invoking a serene and laid-back connection to nature.

I devised a contemporary, light and airy concept that drew on natural textures, patterns and colours found in the views outside, whilst complementing the owners' taste for simple, unfussy interiors. I encouraged my clients to embrace the outdoors by incorporating corner sliding doors and a large picture window, to bring more natural light into the spaces and seal their bond with the woodland outside. This suggestion led them to further assess the first-floor layout, kicking off a larger project which also introduced a Primary Bedroom, Dressing Area and Ensuite overlooking the treetops, which you will see I also designed.

In this open-plan living space, the existing views to the garden and park were restricted, so to maximize the property’s potential and to improve the sense of space, I suggested fully opening up the corner with sliding doors and a slim pillar.

Here we see another view of the corner of the kitchen dining living area, which has been opened fully to create a strong connection with the garden and woods outside.

Open-plan living can feel expansive or overwhelming, but with careful planning, it is possible to design them to feel comfortable and welcoming: the difference lies in zoning. Furniture placement, lighting and subtle tonal shifts help define function without using walls.

Here, I reworked the kitchen layout to improve flow, plus I moved the peninsula to create better sightlines and a distinct division between the kitchen and dining area. Every measurement, junction and finish was considered to ensure the layout worked or my clients and that using it felt effortless.

Note how the mid-green tone of the cupboards and the muted wood accents, sit quietly alongside the leafy scenes outside, whilst the gently rippling worktop emulates the mossy cover found on boulders and stones.

A large picture window was introduced to frame the beautiful scenery beyond, providing colour and interest throughout the year. Simple and stylish furniture and furnishings soften the mid-green and wood toned joinery that frames the window.

For this room, the goal was simple: create somewhere that instantly felt calm from the moment you step inside. So as not to work against the stunning views, but to work with them, I chose soft tones, natural textures and uncluttered surfaces to work together to create that sense of ease.

Drawing inspiration from biophilic design principles, the primary bedroom is swathed in this mid green tone, punctuated with repeated pattern on the bedlinen and grounded through calming oak accents found in the simple joinery and bedside shelves.

Investing in good storage can often be an afterthought on large projects, where budget become tight and decision fatigue sets in – yet it has such a huge impact on how a home feels to live in.

Positioned in one of the very best viewing spots in this home, it was important that this relatively compact space worked hard for my clients while still feeling calm, open and able to celebrate those beautiful treetop views beyond.

In this ensuite bathroom, I focused on clean lines, gentle tones and finishes that feel calm rather than clinical. The floating cabinetry helps the room feel more spacious, while the vertical tiles draw the eye upward and add textural interest echoing the trees and leaves outside.
