Contemporary Courtyard House

The Clapham Common West Side project involves the refurbishment and reconfiguration of a ground-floor flat within a subdivided Victorian terrace house. Key alterations include the installation of three double-glazed sliding doors on the ground-floor rear elevation, replacing the roof of the single-storey rear extension with a new roof lantern, and introducing an internal courtyard. The courtyard will enhance natural daylight and ventilation, contributing to the home's sustainable design.

Externally, the rear glazing will be updated with thermally efficient aluminium profiles, and a smaller, more elegant roof lantern will be installed in keeping with the existing style. The timber sash windows on the front elevation will be carefully maintained to uphold the property’s historical integrity. The proposal includes the addition of a garden room and the redesign of the rear garden. Enhanced landscaping will complement the internal courtyard.

Internally, the layout will be reconfigured to support open-plan living, merging the kitchen, dining, and living areas into a cohesive space. The basement will be converted into a utility room, adding functional space for the family. The bedrooms and bathrooms will also be modernised, with particular focus on creating a practical and comfortable environment for the family’s two children.

Throughout the project, great care has been taken to respect the building’s context within the Clapham Common Conservation Area. The design integrates high-quality materials and balances modern living requirements with the preservation of the property’s historic features.
