Contemporary Koi Pond

A 1960’s property with an established mature garden was the setting for this ambitious contemporary project. The Koi pond forms a bold and dramatic centre piece for the garden terrace and an enticing view from the rear of the house.

The choice of materials is deliberately monochrome to off set the striking colour and markings of the specimen koi and contrast with the garden beyond. The pond is over 6’ deep and raised with a wide edge to create a low surrounding seat. Raised planters with slate copings extend at the same height to increase the seating area, creating an informal space for socialising.

The shade structure above, supported from aluminium posts, protects the koi from both sun and avian predators and extends to form more dappled shade over the terrace, whilst also screening the south facing rear doors and windows.

Complex dual filtration systems for summer and winter are integrated into the pond and a wide stainless steel blade returns the filtered water back into the system.
