Playroom of Dreams

Does it get any better for a child than their very own pirate ship? We had an absolute blast designing this space for two little boys to enjoy and explore. The brief? Create a fun, unique room with a real wow factor.

Our first step was assessing the back wall cupboards that stretched across half the room. With the angle of the wall in mind, we decided to keep the cupboards on the left side where the wall slants in. To add some fun, we painted a few of the panels with chalkboard paint, creating an interactive drawing area.

The Kit Kemp curtain fabric was actually one of our first selections for the space, allowing us to draw inspiration from its vibrant colour palette and playful pattern. The name of the print, ‘Potato Print’, and its subsequent block pattern make it ideal for a playroom fabric.

Next to this, we installed a reading shelf tree, which can be used to display and store beloved toys or hold books, creating another wonderful reading spot. Decal leaves add detail and break up the white tones of the wall.

We kept the adjacent shelving unit, as it worked well in the space, but gave it a fresh coat of paint to tie it in with the rest of the room.

On the right side of the wall, we designed a custom pirate ship play area. This playful vessel offers the perfect environment for a child’s imagination to set sail. The top deck features two portholes, a starry LED sky, and a trapdoor, all inviting endless adventures. Below deck, a cosy reading nook awaits, with the base cushion fabric emulating a wavy sea and striped cushions accentuating the nautical feel.

Large tatami mats complement the colour scheme, while providing a practical and soft floor covering for young children. The whimsical cloud ceiling lights add a playful touch, beautifully balancing the space.
