Sun Room Extension Cromford

Planning & Design Practice was appointed to design and secure planning permission for a small but impactful single-storey sunroom extension in Cromford. Working in collaboration with Ollie Mart Builders and Oakwright’s, the brief was to create a light-filled space that enhances the home’s connection to its garden and panoramic views across the Derwent Valley, while respecting the character of the traditional stone cottage.
Site Analysis & Context
The Cottage occupies an elevated position just outside Cromford and within the buffer zone of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Although not listed and outside the conservation area, the property sits in a sensitive landscape setting with glimpsed views from public footpaths and the Cromford Canal towpath. The existing dwelling comprises an original farmhouse with later extensions, set within a generous plot that allowed scope for a modest addition without compromising openness.
Proposed Development
The approved scheme introduces a single-storey sunroom extension positioned on an existing patio to the rear of the property. The design features a masonry wall to the north-east elevation for continuity with the existing structure, and a fully glazed south and east elevation to maximise natural light and capture sweeping views of the valley. Internally, the sunroom connects directly to the kitchen, with a new doorway providing access to the garden
