…or a triple actThis beautiful piece of furniture has enabled a relatively narrow room to sleep three comfortably. And it’s not just a bed – it has bookshelves at the far end and drawers in the base, too. Matching the floor with the material used to make the beds was a well-thought-out decision, as it ups the room’s streamlined look.
With the living room next door housing bookshelves and plenty of storage, we have the added luxury of not needing to build in alcove storage units to make use of every available inch of space. Instead, in our new snug, there will be the opportunity for vintage pieces, maybe a sideboard. We’re also hoping to transport a lovely wood and glass cabinet from its current position in the original dining room alcove into the snug. We plan to repurpose it as a bar area. (You can see the cabinet in a video on my Renovationwreck Instagram feed.)I like what they’ve done with that idea in this room – the smart glassware and mirrored back add a touch of retro glamour. In reality, we have no matching sets of glassware to our name (one of the joys of moving), but once we’re in, we’ve promised to treat ourselves, and no doubt we’ll be needing a stiff drink by then, too…Check out the couple’s progress on Clare’s Instagram feed @renovation_wreck and look out for her next diary instalment in a couple of weeks. What kinds of features and décor would you put into a ‘snug’ room – and do you have any tips for Clare’s renovation? The upper-ground-floor hallway sets the tone for the rest of the townhouse, with a sophisticated colour palette and a mix of old and new pieces.“We wanted to keep the hallway light and bright, and there was quite a lot of artwork to display, so this added the colour,” says the designer. “We also wanted a contrast between the walls and the woodwork, so we used a slightly darker shade for the skirting boards and doors.”Walls painted in French Grey; woodwork painted in French Grey Dark, both Little Greene. Helping your wisteria to flowerIf you buy a named cultivar that’s in flower at the time of purchase, then you have more chance of having a plant that will continue to produce flowers. Wisteria grown from seed can take between 15-20 years to flower.Wisteria can sometimes still take a couple of years to bloom again, even when bought while in flower. You may notice you have no flowers for the first two years, but you shouldn’t worry too much – once the roots are well established, it should settle. If it doesn’t, you may need to start again. As most wisteria are grafted onto stronger, less floriferous forms, it’s best to cut out all the long green spindly tendrils and growth at the base of the plant below the main stem. If you do this at the time of pruning, this will avoid the original plant from taking over and outgrowing the grafted variety.Weather conditions can affect flowering, too. Dry soil in the summer means you need to keep an eye on making sure your plant is well watered, as this can affect flowering. Sharp spring frosts may also prevent flower buds forming and lead to buds dropping.
Incorporate wood panellingTo really nail the Shaker look, it helps to add timber panels to the other elements in the room. In this gorgeous kitchen, the Shaker-style units have been complemented by a panel of tongue-and-groove and a matching line of pegs. It not only looks attractive, it’s practical, too – the walls are protected and easy to wipe, and the hooks provide easy-access storage for cleaning products, crockery and utensils.
Double up with a shelf aboveHow’s this for a simple yet stylish idea for your kitchen walls? A bare wood rack, complete with a shelf and a row of pegs, is ideal for storing chopping boards, cups and utensils, as well as jars and books along the ledge. The design of this shelf unit and peg rail is very plain, yet it looks gorgeous and is brilliantly functional.
Create perceived depthThere are many ways to make a solid wall feel just that bit further away than it really is. One is with a genius wallpaper design like this, which suggests visual depth without overwhelming the scheme (the soft details and light background colour are key to its success). Another way to perform this trick is with mirrors (more on that in a moment), or with backlit, open shelving built into alcoves – and kept neat and clutter-free.
The colour: Pinky-greyWhy it’s a contender: It’s grey, plus warmthDulux’s Colour of the Year 2018 is Heart Wood and this, plus other mauves and heathers, are for decorators who’ve fretted about grey looking too cool. The pink element means that threat is avoided, but the tint doesn’t stray into candy territory. This teaming of wooden cabinetry with pinky-grey is a combination to note if you’re after a kitchen with maximum warmth.Want to decorate with Dulux’s Colour of The Year 2018? Dress it upYou’ll probably be putting on your most glittery, gorgeous outfit, so why not treat your living space to some fun dressing up, too? You don’t have to spend a fortune, and it can be quick and easy. A few paper stars like these add an instant celebratory vibe or hang a couple of colourful paper balls or fans.
