10 Ways to Design a Dramatic Bedroom of Your Own
Make the Most of Your Sleeping Space With a Few Tricks of the Trade
We are often drawn to dramatic bedrooms for their dark, saturated walls, bold bedding, oversized artwork and heavy drapes. However, some of those choices often seem unrealistic for our own homes. But truly, a dramatic bedroom can be created with just a few tricks of the trade. A touch of color, a unifying element, a monochromatic window covering or even dimmed lighting may just be the right component for your dramatic bedroom. Check out these examples, and soon you will be off and running to create your dramatic sleeping space.
2. Create a visual flow. To achieve a good flow and unity, link bedroom style, colors, accessories with the adjacent bathroom. It is easy to accomplish by incorporating bedroom materials such as fabric, tile, wood, certain finishes to the bathroom furniture and décor. (See the peek-a-boo to the bedroom?)
3. Cover windows well. Drapery panels with black-out lining is the best choice for a master bedroom, as they will provide privacy and will block light and sound.
4. Match draperies with walls. When installing window treatments in your bedroom make them in the same color as walls. This effect will create a more restful and calming atmosphere and make a small bedroom appear larger.
5. Vary your lighting. Instead of flooding the whole bedroom with one bright ceiling light use individual lamps and candles in different areas of the bedroom to achieve a more dramatic, cozy and intimate mood.
6. Make lighting adjustable. Adding dimmers to your bedroom and master bathroom will help make the light softer and adjustable.
Tip: Uplight plant life from the floor and create a new ambiance with its shadowing.

7. Add a warm rug. Wood flooring with a rug or wall to wall carpet is preferable for bedroom, especially in cooler climates.
8. Simplify for smaller rooms. For a small bedroom, a simple bed without a footboard or a bed with decorative metal work will give a more spacious and airy look.
9. Make larger rooms feel cozy. For a large bedroom, add oversized furniture with extra details to help make the bedroom appear smaller.
10. Create intimacy with color. If the bedroom feels too large, painting or paneling the walls in deep rich color will help create a more intimate atmosphere.
