Winding paths are an excellent idea - and they need neither to be paved (which is expensive), nor go through your lawn. Remember that kids on farms run barefoot over dirt paths. I have a two year old and a four year old. They run barefoot and ride their bikes over +- 3 foot wide dirt paths that wind and loop within the flower beds that surround the lawn. Because the paths wind and loop, the children can run around a-not-that-big space, the routes make it longer; because the paths twist within the flower beds, the children are surrounded by indigenous plants and mediums size trees on either side (plants which every-so-often grow 'treasure'); it has a secret feel. Finally, the lawn is left undivided for running about games. The garden looks undisturbed and has a natural look. We have done some other things and although the garden is not that amazing to look at at first glance, kids keep finding playful things to see and do.
