It seems to me that the best way to find more space is often by re-imagining the actual rooms. For example, draw a plan of the house and all its rooms. Using the plan, take out the internal walls. Re-think what might be done with the space between the external walls? I recently did this with a typical 3-bedroom 1-bathroom house. The configuration was: front half of the house left to right - existing small verandah, small living room, entrance hall, two bedrooms; back half of the house left to right - existing small dining, kitchen, laundry, bathroom and third bedroom. I reconfigured this space to: front half of the house - larger living room by knocking down the front wall and including the front verandah as part of the internal living space (leaving a small part of the verandah as entry portico), entrance hall, two bedrooms; back half of the house: large eat-in kitchen and European laundry with most of rear wall being glass doors which can open fully to the garden, new bathroom in the old laundry, new third bedroom (old bathroom plus some of old bed 3), new ensuite and walk-in wardrobe to main bedroom (most of old bed 3). The only addition to the external space was a large, covered al fresco area off the kitchen which doubles as a children's playroom (using plastic roller-blinds in inclement weather). The large kitchen table, which is placed alongside the glass bi-fold doors) also doubles as my outdoor dining table. I was lucky that the house needed a full update in terms of the kitchen, bathroom and laundry, but the difference that the changes made by re-configuring the back half of the house has been amazing, and the new large living room now allows for a dining area as well as a light-filled lounge area.
