Bathrooms are so many and varied these days that you could say ‘anything goes’, but underneath the style there are some universal design principles that can point the way to success – whatever style you choose.

Don’t cram in too much
Even though bathrooms are often squeezed into the smallest spaces possible, it can still be tempting to cram in a bath, separate shower, twin basins, toilet and bidet. My advice is, give your space a break.
Only go for a separate bath and shower if there’s genuinely enough room; otherwise, combine the two. Remember that the user needs enough room to stand, dry themselves and turn around, as well as the space looking good.

Think about the details
Even bathrooms with the most expensive fittings and sanitaryware can end up appearing disjointed if the details aren’t carefully considered.
A common example would be a glass shower screen up against the side of a vanity unit. This might look great from one angle, but what do you see of the side of the unit through the glass? Will dirt get down there and be impossible to remove?
Another detail to consider is where tiling stops halfway up a wall, leaving a horizontal ridge that will only collect dust. Either tile the whole wall, or set the face of the tiling flush with the face of the wall above by adding an extra layer of plasterboard above that line before the skim coat of plaster.

Love the redesign of our long narrow master. It's now a grand space created for aging in place, has function and beauty. We got rid of our cramped walk-in closet and married it with the bathroom. So now we have a dressing room, a double shower and lots of storage and space.
In relation to the above question, I was also wondering if it was possible to have a hole cut for a niche if you buy very large format tiles?
Two blunders during our custom home build. I wanted a window above rhe guest bathroom commode for natural light and ventilation. Our CM said it would be "butted" up against the tub/shower tile and not look good. I should have kept my decsion as a tall narrow window would have worked. 2nd blunder, I overlooked having the primary bathroom tub window as opening and a window above the commode room. Major regrets im trying to forget. Not easy.
