Traditional Garden | Photo by Andrew Keys

As a child I was always hurting myself and my mother seemed to have every bottle that existed of witch hazel stored in our bathroom cupboards ready to pour onto cotton wool and pressed it all over my cuts and bruises. I had no idea that the clear liquid in the bottles came from this amazingly beautiful shrub. There are various colours of witch hazel or Hamemalis from yellow,s oranges to deep reds. THis is a must for the winter garden, the flowers are not killed by frost and the spicy fragrance fills the autumn and winter air.
