Transforming a small, steeply sloped back garden into a functional and inviting space came with its own set of unique challenges. Careful terracing was required to create a balanced, accessible layout, while the design needed to maximise usable space by incorporating multiple sitting areas. The result is a stunning garden oasis that feels expansive and harmonious.
To achieve this, the design team employed a diagonal layout grid, where each partition sits at a different level, creating a dynamic sense of depth and openness. The largest sitting area, located at the bottom of the slope, is a porcelain-paved patio seamlessly connected to the back entrance of the house.
Midway up the terrace, a cosy lounging area offers a more secluded retreat, while the top level features a practical utility drying area. These levels are connected by sculptural steps crafted from staggered hardwood and metal mesh platforms, blending functionality with artistic flair.
Lush evergreen planting adds softness to the structured design, creating an almost tropical atmosphere. The planting scheme enhances the garden's year-round appeal, providing a vibrant and tranquil backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the clean lines of the hardscaping.
This thoughtfully designed garden demonstrates how even challenging terrain can be transformed into a versatile and aesthetically pleasing outdoor space.

ustainable Park (The Nest) is a 1.5ha public park and playground for the Highlands community constructed from recycled materials. Key items were found on site or brought to site having been salvaged from elsewhere.
ULS Group extracted these materials, rejuvenated them for clear identification and then reused in the new open space. Working to an original Spiire design, our team meticulously placed inconsistently sized individual items (with considerable autonomy) as repurposed park and playground features. Augmenting these elements with a mini scooter track, crawling tunnels, walking paths, shelters and original art pieces .. together with a southerly reserve of native bushland, Sustainable Park is like no other.

Within this garden we wanted to create a space which was not only on numerous levels, but also had various points of interest. This garden is on a slope, but is also very wide.
Firstly, we broke up the space by using rustic sleepers to create several raised beds,as well as steps which lead to differennt zones. This helps to give the garden a more traditional, country edge.
The sleepers were also used to create a winding path through out the garden, marrying together the various areas. The path leads up to the impressive sunburst pergola and circular stone patio. This is the perfect spot to view the whole garden.
At the other end of the garden another pergola sits amougnst a bustling flower bed, and will be used to train vining flowers.
Along the back wall of the garden a raised bed is home to a stunning display of wildflower. This plot is not only a fabulous riot of colour and full of rustic charm, but it also attracts a whole host of insects and animals. While wildflowers looks great they are also very low maintenance.
Mixed gravel has been used to create a variety of texture. This surface is intermittently dotted with colour with lemon thyme, red hot pokers and foxgloves.
Stone has been used to create a warm and welcoming patio area. Flower beds at the front of the garden can be used for veg and other leafy plants.
Overall we have created a country style with a very contemporary twist through the use of gravel, modern shape and structural landscaping.

The garden comprises of 3 areas; a paved dining/seating area immediately outside the kitchen, a lawned area bounded by flower beds, with a large water feature between. The latter creates a fantastic focal point from the internal living spaces to provide interest throughout the year. To the side of the property is also a decked area, perfect for a hot tub.

The rear of the property has been completely redone. The rear and side brick facades have been painted white. New aluminium framed doors and windows open the kitchen and dining area onto the garden. The garden has been landscaped with limestone levels, steps and rendered raised planters. A hand made timber slatted fence gives the needed privacy.
