Through elegant simplicity, the Mont Albert residence offers a stylish new addition to Melbourne’s suburban landscape. Charged with completely replacing an existing 1950s property, AMG Architects seized the opportunity to create a modern, unpretentious classic. The juxtaposition of dramatic architectural features with simple, refined lines provides a space that asserts itself as an individual yet shows great sensitivity to surrounding homes. A Japanese-inspired gravel courtyard separates the distinct bedroom and living wings, yet creates an interesting link that draws the two elements together and out into the external areas. This relationship between the home’s elements and the external environment is further enhanced by the floor-to-ceiling windows and clever integration of the outdoor activity spaces into the design. AMG Architects’ attention to detail, sensitivity and commitment to artful design is exemplified in this modern nod to suburban living.

A young family of four, have commissioned FPA to extend their steep roofed cottage in the suburban town of Purley, Croydon. This project offers the opportunity to revise and refine concepts and principles that FPA had outlined in the design of their house extension project in Surbiton and similarly, here too, the project is split into two separate sub-briefs and organised, once again, around two distinctive new buildings. The side extension is monolithic, with hollowed-out apertures and finished in dark painted render to harmonise with the somber bricks and accommodates ancillary functions. The back extension is conceived as a spatial sun and light catcher. An architectural nacre piece is hung indoors to "catch the light" from nearby sources. A precise study of the sun path has inspired the careful insertion of openings of different types and shapes to direct one's view towards the outside. The new building is articulated by 'pulling' and 'stretching' its edges to produce a dramatic sculptural interior. The back extension is clad with three-dimensional textured timber boards to produce heavy shades and augment its sculptural properties, creating a stronger relationship with the mature trees at the end of the back garden.

Tinbeerwah Residence is a semi-rural retreat located in the Sunshine Coast hinterland for an international Client. The design of the residence continues Kirk’s commitment to simplicity of form and planning. There is a great emphasis on material qualities, with a shared commitment between the Client and Architect to produce a residence that will age and improve over time. Siting of the residence has been carefully considered to respond to environmental conditions, and to control the transition from the designed landscape of the residence to the natural bushland beyond. The residence occupies a solid plinth with serves to separate the main building from the landscape and assist in the clear delineation of the made landscape and the landscape in its natural state. Design ideas for a large contemporary single-wall kitchen/diner in London.

In the countryside not far from a popular west coast beach, this inter-generational family home is comprised of a main residence and three small individual buildings as the secondary residence. Following the strong lines of the architecture, and using the buildings as shelter from the wind, we designed a stepped fence to create an enclosed outdoor living area, linking a series of courtyards and decks together to manage the level changes of the site. While each small building has its own intimate outdoor space, these spaces combine to connect the three buildings into a whole home, providing space for the extended family to gather. The courtyards also incorporate a spa pool, barbeque, clothesline and utility area and outdoor shower for the grandchildren after those sandy visits to the beach.Referencing the colours of scandinavian coastal country homes, each of the three entry gates was painted a different feature colour, making it easy to guide guests and other visitors to the appropriate entrance. This palette was then repeated through the plantings and outdoor furnishings used. The plants chosen also incorporate a selection of New Zealand natives suitable to the site, a number of edible plants, and a selection of 'old favourites' that the clients had loved from their past gardens in Christchurch ... including photinia 'red robin', flowering cherry trees, wisteria and Compassion climbing roses.Outside of the protected courtyard, planting is minimal to allow the beautiful view over the wetland and wider landscape to capture full attention.This garden is still under development, the lawns are developing well and the next round of planting is about to begin. The main restaurant space in a Guangzhou lifestyle and entertainment complex. Named after the role of the head of customs during the Qing dynasty in the 19th century – a time when Canton was an essential port of trade between China and the rest of the world – the design of the restaurant reflects the menagerie of cultural influences that came about during that period, resulting in an aesthetic that is both varied and unique to a distinct time and place in history. Chinoiserie figures prominently throughout the design, bolstered by Scandinavian and industrial influences. In the main dining hall, an intricate timberwork ceiling recalls train cabins of old, while plush banquettes, brass trimmings, rattan screens and custom-designed rococo light fixtures intermingle to create a rich, tactile tapestry that evokes a world of refinement. The VIP rooms further build on a sense of intimacy with a predominantly dark palette, crystal palm tree chandeliers, decadent Coltex upholstery and custom rattan furniture.
