I hired Robin to build a spiral staircase after a long saga with a different company. Robin was very empathetic, I liked him and trusted him. He pushed off the job for a few months, despite the fact that I hired him because the previous company was too unresponsive, but ultimately he designed a cool stair well. It took weeks longer than it should have, and ultimately cost me much more because he did not replace the flooring around my new stair well so I had to have a flooring contractor come in. However, the kicker is that he never finished. We did a walk through in July 2019 and he had a laundry list of items that needed to be done (from creating a cap on an open steel pipe, to replacing a box covering of wiring he left hanging out, to fixing paint on the balusters). He has not been back since that day. In fact he stopped responding to my emails months ago. I regret that I trusted him enough to pay him. I would like to believe he is a good human and very skilled stair maker, but he is a terrible business man and consequently I would not recommend him.

Robin did a great job. The process took longer than expected but most of the problems were due to snow delays. He quickly corrected any errors. He was good about protecting my floors and walls. He also made sure I was involved in the whole process.

I hired Robin Dubois to design and build new stair railing for my foyer area. He was very professional offering his extended knowledge for my project. His eye for detail was a positive reflection on his outstanding craftsmanship. He worked directly inside of my home to build the new rails, he worked within the giving timeframe based on our contract and kept the area clean from dust and clutter.
I absolutely love my new stair rails and would hire him again for other services.
Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Arie Gray

We needed to replace a wobbly and old banister and were thrilled to receive a beautiful work of art that adds value and beauty to our home. Robin is a true artisan and it shows in his work.

All of our banisters were in sad shape. Robin created beautiful new ones, which created a great modern finishing touch to our townhouse before we sold it. We are already talking about redoing the banister in our new home to create a grand entrance! Would definitely recommend. He was courteous, professional, and took great pride in his work.

Whenever hiring someone to do some work in one's home, the questions seem to be very much the same: Is this person skilled at what he does? Will he follow-through if there are any concerns and be sure that everything meets expectations? Is he a perfectionist in terms of taking pride in his work? Can he be trusted in terms of pricing, workmanship and even being alone in one's house? And something as basic as is he a nice person? Well, Robin Dubois exceeds all of these criteria. He is a skilled, friendly, pleasant and knowledgeable craftsman who takes pride in his work. He listened to my overall intent regarding design and he created exactly what I wanted. Now, i am the proud owner of a handrail that adds so much to the overall ambience of my home. I was very fortunate to have met Robin. His work brought not only a much needed improvement but also value to my home. I obviously recommend him without reservation. Richard

Robin Dubois put in a custom staircase railing for our three story townhouse (photos can be seen on this Houzz site). He replaced our outdated builder-grade oak staircase with beautiful high quality wood newels and wrought iron balusters. He carefully stained the newels to match our hardwood floors. He was very professional and communicated with us on a regular basis before and during the project.

Robin Dubois of Dubois Craftsmen put in a custom staircase railing that replaced our outdated railing. The railing consisted of oak newel posts and hand rails with iron balusters. Words cannot illustrate how great our railings look now. It's the first thing you notice as you walk in our house and we are always immediately complimented on how well it looks. The contractor working on the rest of our renovations was also really impressed. The railings really add a touch of class and ties together all of our recent updates to the house. Robin worked with us on the price and was able to use solid, well built pieces that fit our budget. I literally looked around the house after he was finish to see what else I could have him do. There are not enough stars to describe his work and he is highly recommended.

We hired Robin Du Bois to transform an ugly stairwell in our home. He treated us with respect and recognized our unique customer needs. From the start he knew what would work best, but he did not pressure us. Instead, he offered many options and helped us narrow our focus until we could make decisions comfortably. We are extremely satisfied with the outcome. It is beautiful! Robin knows he is talented, but he remains humble. He lets his work showcase his artistic creativity, subject knowledge, and exemplary level of skill in his trade. Robin Du Bois is a master craftsman.

Review for Robin Dubois, Craftsman.
I needed to have the 18 year old wobbly stair rail in my entryway foyer replaced -- what I got was a work of art! I solicited several quotes for the replacement of the banisters, newels and railing and had a very specific idea about what I wanted, something in the arts and crafts style from the early 1900s. Most of the companies provided me with estimates based on what they could do, Robin Dubois provided me with an estimate based on what I wanted. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and the experience was the best one I have ever had with a contractor. He contributed as much or more to the design of the stair rail than I did and his execution was beautiful. He started and finished the project when he said he would, the materials for the banisters and rails were of the highest quality, the finish was stunning and the rail is nearly as stable as a solid wall. Nearly everyone who has come into the house has commented on how striking the stair rail is. He was as much an artist as a craftsman. If I had another stair rail to replace, he would be the one to do it.

Thanks for your very kind words, I appreciate these very much, and, I'm glad the spiral stairs is "cool"!
Regards the "kicker" you mention, there are factual discrepancies in your statements which I can document completely. The key item I see is that you believe I cost you more by not replacing flooring in the area of the renovation. This has some missing detail that deprive the reader of context. One, the flooring was not included in the contract, only the removal of the immediately adjacent old brown tile. That I clearly said in the contract had to be done to expose the area where the spiral would go down through the floor. I also clearly stated that the flooring would not be replaced since the entire room would have to be done, and you had not chosen either a flooring or a contractor to estimate this. You were very clear that you were replacing the flooring in the room affected, and to help keep the room looking neater in the meantime I offered to create a neat line between the removed floor and the intact floor, which I did. Later during construction, you became very disappointed that I was not re-installing the broken up tile in the affected area. Given that very old ceramic tile on thin set has to be shattered into pieces to remove it I explained that this was never a possibility. I found it difficult to grasp that you thought badly of me for this. This was the advent of a series of discontented feedback, accusations that I had improperly installed the stairs not level with the adjacent flooring, repudiation on my part of perhaps as many as 5 different flooring contractor sales people who told you erroneously that the level of the new work was different and would require remedial work to fix before flooring would install level with the next room. Understandably confusing. In the end, you hired back the original flooring contractor who did the adjacent hardwood. He installed the flooring without demur according to you, confirming the planning I did to ensure that was in fact correct. If you would please present here any factual information that shows I contracted to provide you new flooring or to repair the electrical system in the back yard, I would be most appreciative.
Regarding wires left hanging, there were wires leading to the back yard, which were shorted and un-serviceable. They were unsafely connected to your service and could have caused a fire. My licensed electrician removed that connection for safety, and advised we leave the wires exposed so that the inspector could clearly see they were disconnected and out of service. This is in the unfinished basement below the stairs. Its up to you if you want to repair the extensive outdoor lighting and outlets fed by this defunct cable, or simply remove it and permanently disable the system. I can't be responsible taking action that can be interpreted as hiding wiring faults from inspection.
My last visit was to go over details and turn the project over to the incoming flooring contractor, describe what they might need in terms of removing a couple of balusters, to install flooring, and your acceptance of the project in general. You did so, and gave me a check for the balance. In the course of inspection you used the F word several times along with very loud expletives, apparently to yourself regarding the fact that the basement was not finished. This affected me very negatively. I left as soon as possible. In followup emails which I can publish with your permission, you were extremely aggressive and repeated the incorrect claims published here. I'm sorry but I can't handle this kind of language and communication.
If you would remove the review containing the items mentioned, that I am not in any way responsible for, the other items can be addressed, provided we communicate professionally.
To anyone reading this review, I would offer numerous photographs of the completed work, and an opportunity to review the actual contract in full.
Respectfully
Robin
