Rust Construction

Rust Construction was professional, prompt, and easy to work with. We hired them for a traditional upgrade with a focus on our kitchen, bedroom, and increasing storage space while maintaining Old Town charm. Another crucial thing we valued was their candid advice when we couldn't decide (railings, mouldings, hardware, etc.). Because they've been working in the area for four generations and actually built or renovated many of the area's historic homes, they always presented a unique insight that was specific to our tastes but would fit and add value to our home. We hired Rust Construction in 2010 to complete a gut renovation of our kitchen in Old Town. The work was completed beautifully and efficiently, with the entire process taking 35 days. Rust consulted with us along the way on options for ventilation and built ins, as well as installation of a gas line. Rust's employees and subcontractors work together as a seamless group, having benefitted from their longstanding relationships. This was especially important during our project when it was discovered that the existing water shutoff system in our home was faulty and needed repair. We were very happy with the results of our project and with the process. In 2016, Rust renovated 3 bathrooms for us, including rebuilding several floors and installing a new window and several cabinets. As in our 2010 project, Rust kept us up to date and consulted with us along the way on any issues that arose. I will hire Rust again for future projects.

Rust Construction completed two renovations to our historic home in Old Town, Alexandria. The house built in 1802 had evolved from its first iteration as a private residence to later uses as a girls' high school and then School of Nursing for Alexandria Hospital. With those changes came a disjointed and outdated layout. Rust Construction's first project was a complete renovation to return the home to its original character. The project required an overhaul of the mechanical system and utilities, moving walls, detailed restoration of original aspects of the exterior and interior of the home, a new kitchen, and several bathrooms throughout the building. The second renovation was an innovative design-build project to turn a large basement in to a rustic, but habitable space complete with a full bar, wine cellar, entertainment room, exercise room, bathroom, and laundry. Under this phase of work Rust Construction used exposed concrete, old barn siding, exposed stone and masonry, and salvaged doors on barn rollers to create a unique, informal area in complimentary contrast to the rest of the historic aspects of the home.

We hired Rust Construction to rebuild our kitchen and dining room, renovate two bathrooms, replace three exterior doors, and repaint our Old Town house inside and out. The company and its contractors were a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. Their work was completely thorough, and they kept us informed of every surprise revealed behind the walls and under the floors of our house, even when we were out of town. The craftsmanship in the new paneling they made for our kitchen and powder room was especially impressive, and they brought some interior pocket doors back into service after decades of being unusable. When they finished our job, we felt as if we were living inside a Swiss watch; every door clicks shut, everything fits and is level and solid. We especially appreciated the warmth and friendliness of every member of the staff.
