Cambridge and London based Architectural Design Practice

Founded in 2020 by Katie Kasabalis and Darius Woo, Kasawoo is a design practice based in Cambridge and London with a mission to design gently. Our practice is young and energetic with a strong interest in both building and teaching, which makes our approach to design both academic and hands-on. We are interested in a new kind of minimalism, not through the reduction of ornaments but through the careful use of available resources in intelligent ways. Both Katie and Darius have over 15 years of experience. Our work advocates for a more ‘gentle’ approach to building; one that minimizes demolition and celebrates existing conditions. We begin every project by asking ourselves, what is the least we need to change to really make a difference? That is why we are especially interested in taking on small projects with big ideas. And by small we do not necessarily mean small in terms of size, but rather restriction to resources- be it capital, skills or material. Trying to do more with less is something that we take quite seriously. We realise the potential of our projects through minimising demolition and we pride ourselves in always finding the smallest degree of intervention. Indeed, the projects that excite us the most are those with limited resources but creative clients who care about design. A homeowner should choose Kasawoo because early on in our practice we discovered that good design was often out of reach for most people, and we made a commitment to change that. For us, good design does not need to come with a big price tag. That is why we set up our practice to bring this ethos to life. As firm believers of social equality, we are a proud woman co-founded company dedicated to inclusivity and diversity in architecture, design, and the building industry at large. Darius and Katie have been indispensible. After talking us through our options and discussing our tastes, they helped us design a set up we are really happy with (and that makes practical sense). Many decisions that would have been daunting and effortful we could make easily and in confidence with their knowledge and experience. They were always responsive and on-hand to help us when we had queries, and they were really handy in managing our contractors. At the end of this experience, I am very glad we hired them. (And, thanks to them, I now know the cultural meanings of different wood cuts in the context of flooring.)

Kasawoo helped us to obtain planning approval for modifications to our Victorian terraced home located in a conservation area. They were extremely helpful, pleasant to work with, always responded promptly and guided us efficiently through the process to a successful outcome. Katie and Darius did a great job to convert a 90's bungalow into a home my family really love. Their design makes the flow of the house more pleasant and utilised the space much better. They really go extra miles to truly understand our requirements, give us options and explain clearly pros and cons of each option. Their design was tailor-made to our existing traditional style furniture, the style of the existing house and then injected modern theme. Their focus on quality is impressive. They have high standard in their work. Darius also helped us managing the building work. He spent lots of time communicating with the builders and me. Managing tradesman is not something we're good at. Darius takes care of that for us. My wife and I are really pleased with Katie and Darius' work. We just finished phase 1 of the renovation and will be working with them for the next phase. If you're after quality and aesthetic in design, you definitely should choose Kasawoo. You'll find every penny you spend is worth it.

Katie and Darius were incredibly easy to work with, they were constantly checking in to make sure that design details were to my preference and made sure I was involved as much as I wanted to be. I made a few tweaks along the road, and they were very accommodating and thoughtful. Letting someone new take up the design of your home can be hard, but Kasawoo made the process very smooth and showed me the potential my dated home could have. Kasawoo helped us to transform a plain commercial building unit into a multipurpose private office and entertainment space. Through the design of the 1.5 floor layout and inclusion of clever storage partitions, we were enabled to fully utilize the modest floor space. All sections of the unit remain bright and airy, as the overall layout respects the natural lightning from the original windows.. Needless to say, service was friendly and professional!
