The Glass Cathedral is a concept born of two friends from London, Paul and Cliff. It’s a meeting point for their ideas, and for their interests: interests that are rooted in their shared passion for creative art and forward thinking as well as their combined fascination with the cultural and imaginative histories of contemporary England. But even more than that, The Glass Cathedral is a recycling project heavily focused on regenerating artifacts that might otherwise be abandoned. We do this by drawing upon our heritage and harnessing the lost crafts of our past: making something exciting and new from the old and the antiquated. We are giving life back to furniture that was created by skilled craftsmen so many years ago, and by capturing the essence of British tradition with a modern and exciting twist. The Glass Cathedral is primarily a place where antique furniture is taken, stripped back to the bone and re-conditioned, but with an entirely refreshing, artistic edge to it. We like to think of it as painting, but using furniture as our canvas. What we are creating is to our minds art, and not functional furniture. You may see it differently, and that is your choice, but to us these are artworks, and we earnestly hope that one day, as our brand and reputation grows, then so our products become investments, not merely purchases. Everything we produce is one-off. Nothing at all is mass-produced. Each product is what it is: recreated by hand, via the heart. Art is art, and furniture is furniture: but The Glass Cathedral is Furniture Art. In the same style as the late nineteenth century pianist Erik Satie, who believed his music was like wallpaper, we aim to create an ambience with our work. We do not expect you to look at our work for hours on end, but we do believe it can immeasurably enhance any space and bring a sense of ephemeral serenity and well-being to anyone who encounters it. The Glass is the light, the Cathedral is the old and the dusty; and together they make something magnificent.
