shower over a bath

We are planning the fitting out of our newbuild house. The family bathroom will have a bath with a shower over. Assume a standard 170x70cm bath, with a glass shower screen going part the way along.

We want the shower to be a good experience (so my teens don't use the en suite!), so propose a rainshower head, probably attached to the ceiling.

The question is, where in the ceiling should the shower head be positioned? I'm thinking 50cm from the wall at the plug end of the bath (and centred over the width of the bath) would be reasonable? Closer then you land up standing on the plughole which might not be so good.

Also, the ceiling is low, around 210cm, so would using a ceiling mounted shower head be inadvisable?

Do you already have the bath? When we refitted the family bathroom for our teenagers, we needed a decent bath that could have a shower over but also be a lovely bath to chill in. I hate the look of normal shower-baths, so went with a deep steel double-ended bath. We also kept the plug hole in the middle. We then went with a bath filler (so no taps sticking in your back). We thought about a ceiling rose but went with a large rose coming from the wall along with a second small moveable shower head too.

Not the best photos due to being taken at night and before the room was decorated! The shower screen folds back to the wall. The shower is a Grohe set - it’s really powerful. There’s plenty of room to shower and the bath is deep and robust enough for a spa like treat! (Maybe avoid real marble tiles like these though - the plumber hated them!)

The comments above are helpful. As a generalisation, I would add that a family home retains its bath for young children (and, indeed young grandchildren); most adults opt for a shower these days. So great that you have a bath somewhere, albeit any young children would need to walk through the bedroom to get to it. Depending on how big your bathroom is actually, and your budget, we had a similar challenge and fitted a shower space with hinged shower door in a wet room style design so that the family bathroom had both bath and shower. The hinged door opens up the floor space and prevents the room being sprayed; in fact only the bath itself gets wet, and even then not significantly. This may be of interest. The room footprint in this case was 1.9m by 2.1m. Other things to consider include opening the bathroom door outwards to create better use of the floor space you have. We also moved the door in this case to fit the sink comfortably, and fitted a small bath (which is fine for children). Hope this helps in some way. Nick

Depends on style/functionality you’re after - we are having a Japanese inspired bathroom (shower first, then soak in a tub) and will be buying an Omnitub - they are very deep. They have a showroom, we visited when we holidayed in Bath and Bristol last year. I’ll check out Lusso tub myself, have their vanity unit in the garage, waiting for us to begin the refurb.

If you're going to have a fitted bath (rather than a free-standing one) then it makes sense to put a shower over it - so you have a shower head to rinse the bath at the very least! Assuming it's a kids bathroom more than anyone else, then I think a shower over bath is perfectly acceptable in exchange for more space in the room. I'd put in double sinks though, so more than one kid can brush teeth at the same time (or preen themselves as they become teens) - also makes it feel a bit more fancy. There should also be room for decent storage too - just having more space in the room will make it feel more luxurious too.
