Lounge cottage inspiration ideas needed please!

last month

I have recently moved into a cottage with pine coloured wood and big open fire place and i need inspiration as to what colours and furniture would work and whereabouts. Not sure whether to keep Tv where it is or have a big unit across the big main wall? If anyone can help that would be great

Such a lovely room! One thing I would do is remove the small rugs floating around the room and add a large rug by the seating to bring it all together and add cosiness. I would also add some floor lamps next to the seating, so much cosier than the single light. Something like this.

Hi thanks very much for the useful hints and tips, they've really helped! So far I've done a subtle re-jig of the decorative items on the shelves and thinned them out a bit to make it less busy (and more contemporary). I have added a cushion and throw plus a bit more useful storage baskets and so far I'm happier with it now. I also have to consider the overall flow of the room rather than 1 wall - for example when I walk into the room this wall is on the left and the sofa wall is on the right, and there was a risk that if I added shelves etc on this wall it would then unbalance the look of the room as the sofa walls are so far pretty plain. I'm getting a new sofa next month and when this arrives I'll be able to see the room in its finished form and can make any last minute adjustments!! I want to add some more shiny stuff and will get a nice chrome tray or centrepiece for my glass coffee table. Pffft, this house decor lark can take over your life sometimes :))

It's a cosy room apart from the radiator wall. I would paint the alcoves very dark, so that the TV is not s dominant. I think a radiator cover, or painting the radiator in the same colour would help. Then get a big picture, or a wall hanging for that blank space. . I wonder if you could persuade your husband that a lower tv stand would allow for more comfortable viewing?, it is quite high. I don think a bigger tv would help.

I think it’s this one. For me I think I would be replacing the windows with a different shaped aperture and rendering. Given that there also seems to be a sun trap at the front I think there need to be doors from a front room to that patio space and some barrier to separate it from the drive to give privacy do you need this much driveway?

minnie101 - Thank you, and coming in at just £497, wow you're good!! I like the idea of adding brass and will show her your ideas, she was looking at a coffee table very similar to the one you suggested! I think she'd like floral but not her man, so looking at keeping the decor 'male friendly' too :) The TV sadly cant go on the wall opposite the sofa because of where the door opens into the lounge. Maths Wife - Good idea with the room divider, I'll show her as I know she prefers to keep toys etc a little hidden. They are restricted with moving the sofa down any further unfortunately due to the placement of radiators. Thanks, bubbles bathrooms and tiles - I really like that artwork, thank you! I had picked out a similar colour scheme which I think will work well with adding some brass/ metallic accessories.

Hi Sarah,

Wow, what a beautiful, cosy interior space.

Some great inspiration provided to you by the Houzz community, just to add to these for you:

- A lovely decorative ceiling light piece, with a coffee table or large pouffe centred beneath it would enable you to create a central focal point and centre your main seating, side tables, rug and accessories into this area

- Ways to add colour and texture would be: stone or tiled flooring, painted doors, planters in vivid contrasting colours, see image below Farrow and Ball 'drop cloth' on the walls brought to life by a simple vivid purple flower arrangement:

- Or you can keep the walls and ceiling bright and light and utilise the accessories and furnishings (linen and cotton work beautifully within a country style interior) to showcase colour, textures, rugs.

- Side tables are a must have as these can be easily moved throughout your space to accommodate your functional needs (see image above of texture marble effect small side reading table)

- Use the areas of the walls to showcase wall art, pictures in a symmetry format so as not to overwhelm the beauty of the solid wood beams

- Use the fireplace to house a mirror (to provide reflection) and your accessories in a scale organised manner (see above image)
