HB Engineered Wood Floor: V4 or Furlong

Which one has a better quality and finished look on HB pattern?

I hadn't heard of either but just looked them up online. I prefer V4 as it looks more modern. Also consider how easy the company is to deal with in the event of a problem and who looks more professional? HB pattern in what material? Oak? There are many factors to consider including installation, price, lead times, maintenance etc. The appearance is only a part of it.

We are considering HB on Oak. V4 has CD grade wood while Furlong has ABCD grade wood. Thanks for the input.

Hello@jones1978, We had the UFH installed 4 years ago and when researching it, I didn't even consider rugs and trapped heat; my thinking was that is 'they' say you can use carpet, a rug wouldn't make a difference. Well, as I discovered, it depends. If your rug is one of those heavy, high density knots wool rugs, the chances are that it will keep the heat trapped. However, a rather light, either cotton, sisal, viscose or thin wool rug doesn't seem to affect the overall temperature. I think the overall room temperature also depends on your insulation. The office room in the photos above is basically an internal room, it has no exterior walls or windows, so we actually rarely put the heating on in there even in December - and hubby works from home most of the week. Our living room, on the other hand, is the only room in the house with single glazing (conservation area rules) and a heavy rug; it's the coldest room in the house and looses heat pretty quick if we don't close the shutters. Luckily for us, the fireplace is functional and we light a fire almost every evening in the winter. I've been thinking about buying a thinner rug, but it really doesn't bother us that much. Make of this what you will, but personally, I still love UFH and I'd rather live with no rugs than go back to radiators... Good luck with your project! @mckevis - congrats on finishing! I know what you are saying. I've taken pics of them both on our old cutlery drawer (ignore the grubby marks!). What do you think? Our old kitchen knobs pronounced further than the mushroom ones actually. I think the HB ones are nice but my favourite ones are still the AM - we've gone over budget on so many things already but I dint want to get the hardware wrong as it is so important.

Suzanna C. There is no need to buy surplus boxes to sift through the planks simply to then throw away those that you don't like. If you buy an AB (Natural) grade floor it will already have been done for you by the manufacturer. When buying a floor you should get the supplier to clarify what the flooring grade is and what you should expect by way of Knots, live or dead (live knots are still in place, dead knots have fallen out and have been filled). The sizes and number of knots allowed per board, the amount of sapwood (blond wood), and the board dimensions(maximum and minimum lengths). The finest grade is A (Select) grade which is virtually knot & Sapwood free. Personally I think this grade is too bland. Frequently I see A,B,C,D grade flooring with very short planks being sold online which I would describe as firewood. As part of the purchasing process you should ensure you understand the grading of floor you are buying and the plank dimensions. Packs of flooring with a board lengths between 1.2m - 300mm will typically be awful. You really do get what you pay for when you buy cheap wood floor. I would look at AB Grade and then maybe ABC Grade but never ABCD Grade. Not all online flooring retailers are bad and not all are good. You should be able to get a feel for what they know by how they answer questions about the grades as described above, and what they are prepared to put in writing about the flooring if asked to do so. Below is a piece I found on a UK website that I thought might be useful HERE ARE OUR TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOU GET THE FLOORING YOU EXPECT: 1. Don't make your choice of flooring from a small sample, as these can be misleading. 2. Ask your supplier to furnish you with the grading rules for their products. 3. Ask to see pictures of installations using the timber you're interested in, and finally... 5. Remember wood is a natural material and there will be variation from batch to batch. This is part of its beauty.

Sounds as though Furlong has more choice in wood grades. It also depends on who is better value all round? Compare the delivery costs and the length of warranties and what exclusions there are? If they both provided a very similar product what would persuade you to buy from one instead of the other?

Furlong has a better grade of wood so might go with them. The price and wood options are similar. We will have this professionally installed so price is not a big issue.
